The Democrats tried to lose the Civil War. They failed and the North was victorious.
The Democrats tried to lose the Vietnam War. They succeeded and the North was victorious.

I'm awaiting the climax of Act III.

Great article. Thanks for the posting. We should be calling them "Copperheads" again? No a better tagline..."Puppet Heads".

All Confederates and all of their northern collaborators were Democrats. See http://www.republicanbasics.com and http://grandoldpartisan.typepad.com for more information.

Jefferson Davis hoped that a Confederate victory at Gettysburg would result in a truce-with an intact Confederacy.
And never forget it was an activist actor who killed Lincoln...imagine Martin Sheen or Alec Baldwin with guts.

Neocopperheads describe the democrats perfectly. Chicken poops who were on the wrong side of history then and now.

We need a President with the balls to suspend habeus corpus like Lincoln did, and a latter-day Gen. Ambrose Burnside to round up the latter-day Copperheads and intern them until the end of the war.

Sad to say, that step will happen - it's just a matter of when, and under what circumstances. IMO, it would be better to do it now, rather than after one or more American cities are nuked and hundreds of thousands if not millions are murdered by the Islamonazis that are enabled by the treasonous efforts of the latter-day Copperheads in today's 'Rat party.

The Copperheads were unwittingly much closer to being right than today's anti-war crowd.

I personally favor "buttheads" or "sh*theads" myself...

This is a dumb article in National Review.

Virtually none of the 19th Century Copperheads would be alligned with the present-day Democrat Party, any more than those brave men who fought for the South.

Look at the electoral map. Virtually all the former Confederate states are now "red", whereas most of the present-day "blue states" were fighting for Abe Lincoln and his Unionist cause. I dare say that, as usual, the South is overepresented among the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is a bizarre article, unworthy of National Review.

I love history!

Too bad it isn't taught in the public schools anymore. History has been replaced by anti-American grievance peddling.

The .5% of us that are at war learned history from better sources, and have concluded that our country, flaws and all, is worth defending.

Even Karl Marx himself would not align with the present-day DemocRAT Party.

"This is a bizarre article, unworthy of National Review."

It has little to do with geography and all to do with party and philosophy.

Gotta love this one:

Weber quotes the response of a group of Indiana soldiers to letters from Copperhead “friends” back home:

Your letter shows you to be a cowardly traitor. No traitor can be my friend; if you cannot renounce your allegiance to the Copperhead scoundrels and own your allegiance to the Government which has always protected you, you are my enemy, and I wish you were in the ranks of my open, avowed, and manly enemies, that I might put a ball through your black heart, and send your soul to the Arch Rebel himself.

We'll never know but I hope (and bet) the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Cindy Sh*thead are getting "Dear Traitor" letters like that.

where does the name 'copperhead' originate?

republicans gave 'peace democrats' the name 'copperheads' in honor of the poisonous snake of the same name.

a snake, particularly a poisonous one, describes the slithering, slimy democrats perfectly.
