This is a dumb article in National Review.
Virtually none of the 19th Century Copperheads would be alligned with the present-day Democrat Party, any more than those brave men who fought for the South.
Look at the electoral map. Virtually all the former Confederate states are now "red", whereas most of the present-day "blue states" were fighting for Abe Lincoln and his Unionist cause. I dare say that, as usual, the South is overepresented among the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This is a bizarre article, unworthy of National Review.
Even Karl Marx himself would not align with the present-day DemocRAT Party.
"This is a bizarre article, unworthy of National Review."
It has little to do with geography and all to do with party and philosophy.
Agreed. The analogy is weak and the circumstances are entirely different.

Thanks for your response. You put my thoughts into words better than I could have.
