WASHINGTON - Denouncing a conflict entering its fifth year, protesters across the country raised their voices Saturday against U.S. policy in Iraq and marched by the thousands to the Pentagon in the footsteps of an epic demonstration four decades ago against another divisive war.
A counterprotest was staged, too, on a day of dueling signs and sentiments such as "Illegal Combat" and "Peace Through Strength," and songs like "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "War (What's It Good For?)."
Thousands crossed the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial to rally loudly but peacefully near the Pentagon. "We're here in the shadow of the war machine," said anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. "It's like being in the shadow of the death star. They take their death and destruction and they export it around the world. We need to shut it down."
...Police on horseback and foot separated the two groups of demonstrators, who shouted at each other from opposite sides of Constitution Avenue in view of the Lincoln Memorial before the anti-war group marched. Barriers also kept them apart.
But war protester Susanne Shine of Boone, N.C., found herself in a crowd of counterdemonstrators, and came out in tears, with her sign in shreds. "They ripped up my peace sign," she said, after police escorted her, her husband and two adult daughters from the group. "It was really pretty scary for me."
Did the reporters actually witness this? What actually happened? A few years back, at another counterprotest, I saw an ANSWER marcher snatch a Protest Warrior's sign and smash it.

Proper technique for approaching war protester.
1. Approach with baseball bat
2. Hit protester with bat across the face
3. As they get up to fight back, hold out hand stopping them and tell them that they say they don't believe in violence
4. After they calm down repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 until war protester understands the realities of life or becomes unconscious

Any idea what a realistic count for both sides might have been? FNC was saying around 4k for the pukes, a whole lot less than what they advertised.
NBC news said 10 to 20k anti war demonstrators. After looking at Michelle Malkins website I belive NBC used pictures of the pro war demonstrators. Anyone happen to see this??? I may be wrong....

He's done that at least once before. I've seen him at one other counter-protest. Oh, by the way, the yellow Gadsden flag is the one I was holding. At least that made it into the picture. ;-) The picture was taken on the Virginia side of the Memorial Bridge, where a small contingent of us stood up to the collective.

Meant to add--didn't see NBC, but ABC said "a few" pro-war people showed up, and "thousands upon thousands" of anti-war protesters. No bias there... (Hah)
These are the guys who promised they'd move out of the country if Bush were reelected. Yet another broken promise.
I stayed away from CSPAN until the last 30 minutes thinking they'd have a big mob. I was very pleasantly surprised. I'm no expert on crowd estimation but I'd guess closer to two-thousand from what CSPAN was showing at the Pentagon.
Great job to everyone who went to DC....
