Pet deaths prompt recall of pet food

WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

The company alerted the

Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

My bet is on heavy metal contamination in the wheat gluten... lead, mercury, cadmium, etc... The metal ions bind to the proximal convoluted tubule in the kidney and block reabsorption of glucose and electrolytes in the kidney, and can cause kidney failure. This seems most likely in an industrial setting. Look at your pet's gums to try to find a "lead line" at the gingival border. These are a deep purplish to black discoloration formed by the reaction of lead secreted in saliva with the oral flora, which produces sulfides. Gingival lines of various hues may be present in chronic toxic exposure to other metals, which react to form differently colored species... If you see one, definitely get to a vet, as the Lead line is ominous before kidney damage and kidney failure (at least in humans)... Hope this helps

Again, did you even READ the link?

Of course not.

That article has nothing to do with PETA and if you would spend 5 minutes reading you would know that.

TROLL.

Feeding the cat canned tuna over a long period of time even if it's packed in water is not good for the cat. They don't get enough nutrients out of it and it can also cause health problems.

So, you take it back to the store? I've got some Nutro Natural Choice that falls into the catagory. My cat seems to be OK, but then I rotate flavors and the other 3 are OK. He only got 3 of the tainted packets.

Anyone here feed Innova kibble to their cats or dogs

I used to feed Innova to my Irish Wolfhound and it is EXCELLENT! They have one out now called Innova EVO which is equal to feeding raw.

Personally, I wish I could do the raw diet, but I just can't. I don't have the time.

If you don't have the time, there is Innova EVO (kibble) or frozen raw pellets.

I checked the Big Male Grey Cat's gums just now and it's too hard for me to tell. He has naturally very dark pigmentation in his gums. The Little Female has very light pink pigmentation on her gums.

He was at the vet Saturday and the vet gave him an electrolyte IV. The vet also took a blood sample and will call me with the results today.

Hopefully I will get some good news today.

Good advice. Thanks for your tip.

Occassionally I fill their fountain with
http://store.drsoda.com/smartwater.html
Smartwater, about 50/50 with their normal Culligen store refills,
this time I went mostly with Smartwater because they like it so well,
and thankfully they hadn't had any recalled product.

Best wishes for you and your little buddy,
more time was the one thing I never had a chance for with one of mine,
I hope you both get yours.

Actually, why would I have been reading along with everyone else if I didn't "love" my son's dog, that I feed and let out at 5am every morning? What I am appalled at is the LACK of concern for the 3000 babies murdered every day. The most views I have seen on the pro-life site is 2000. Just an observation. I would like to have the administrator let us know what we really care about. Just curious.

Just a heads up, the menufoods has added more brands, more sku, and best by "date) products to it's list.

My Walmart brand Special Kitty pouches which were NOT on the list the other day, are NOW on the list. Also more brands have been added.

Please, everyone check the updated information on the http://www.menufoods.com website. I would hate for anyone to lose a pet to this.

Yes. Animals that eat the spianl cord and brain of the same species are susceptible to 'mad cow' types of diseases. It's a really stupid thing to do and I'm ticked that animal shelters are doing this, probably for a tiny handful of needed $, too.
