"Cooter" Says Fellow Hazzard Castmates Victims of P.C. "Vigilantes" (You ain't gonna believe this)
Internet movie Database ^ | March 16, 2007 | Hildy

A performance by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra featuring John Schneider and Tom Wopat, who appeared in the 1979-85 series The Dukes of Hazzard was canceled after complaints that the series had "racist overtones," according to Ben Jones, who played Cooter on the show and later served two terms as a Georgia Congressman.

"What could these politically correct vigilantes possibly be thinking?" Jones said in a statement, in which he called the cancellation "a dangerous affront to the rights of performing artists and their audiences." Jones particularly criticized the NAACP for endorsing the cancellation. "I'm a life member of the NAACP and proud of it," he said. "Denying an artist an opportunity to entertain an audience because of somebody's wrongheaded political viewpoint is just plain un-American. I have fought for equal rights all of my life, and that is why I am speaking out on this."

Schneider and Wopat were to have headlined a PBS special by the Cincinnati Pops on July 14 titled "Patriotic Broadway."

Corin, do you know whether Jones played up his "Hazzard County" roots or not when he ran?

Yes, he did. But it wasn't Southside. He ran in the 7th District against Eric Cantor. Got his liberal backside thoroughly kicked.

Of course even though Jimmy Webb had his picture taken with Cooter and the General Lee, and gave a rousing defense of the Confederacy at the Confederate Memorial, George Allen is the one that got labled as a "racist" for saying a word no one had ever heard of before.

For a short while John Schneider was married to Tawny Little, the L.A. newsbabe. Anyway, folks at her station got upset when Tawny Little insisted on being called Tawny Schneider after she got married. Of course, the marriage didn't last long and Tawny had to go back to being Tawny Little again. Anyway, Tawny had a reputation for being completely self-absorbed. Well, one day I saw Tawny between takes when she was reporting on a book convention in L.A.. Of course, I just had to go up to her and ask her out for a date, knowing she would instantly reject me since I was no celeb. I was not disappointed. I wish I had a photo of the look of utter DISGUST on Tawny's face.

All we were ever told is that she died and that was told to us on the pilot for "The Andy Griffith Show" which appeared on "The Danny Thomas Show". Opie's pet turtle , Wilford, was stepped on and killed by "Mrs. Balford" out in front of the ice cream parlor and he wants Andy to arrest her for 'murder', give her a fair trial and "hang her." Andy tries to help Opie deal with the loss by talking about how it was when Opie's 'ma' died. Opie looks to Andy and says, "Who stepped on Ma?"

There are hints to her death in a few episodes too.

Cooter's a Democrat. He served as one in Georgia and ran as one against Eric Cantor here in Virginia a few years ago.

I live in that district (VA-7). In all of his campaign literature and some TV spots he referred to himself as Ben "Cooter" Jones.
