Goffstown Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.
The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a good and moral thing, but it would also make the United States safer.
We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty, he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated in madrassas run by militant extremists.
When you understand that, he said, it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States, but also a national security issue. [snip]
While yet to produce a specific budget for his plan, Edwards estimated the U.S. would contribute $3 billion of an estimated $10 billion worldwide cost to bring basic education to 23 million children in impoverished nations by 2015.
He would commit $600 million for overseas health-related initiatives, including programs for clean water.
Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.
Wealthy Americans would foot the bill, Edwards said.
You first, hair-spray boy...
His candidacy is as dead as EF Hutton.
PPPppffffftttt....
Actions speak louder than words, you blow-dried piece of garbage!
(Not you, nctexan. I'm referring to Edwards.)
The only way to end global poverty is by playing Hitler on a global scale and that ain't gonna happen.
Of course he fails to acknoledge that poverty is chiefly caused by socialist policies, and that any country can thrive if they throw off their tyrants (like john-boy wants to be).
If we took all the money in the world and gave it away equally everyone would get $1.50, government would run for 45 seconds and Edwards, would be picking up &*^% from the outhouse loo for work.
So, what does he think money distributed by USAID, bilateral/multilateral grants, etc. are for?
Is he running for President of the U.S. or of the U.N.
I think he's confused.
I'm beginning to think liberalism IS a mental disease.
Maybe the Breck Girl has a point. After all, pouring huge amounts of money into corrupt, dysfunctional countries has worked so well in the past. /sarcasm
I wonder how many poor people are going to be living in the guest quarters at his new house?
He's right. I'll take his house.
Well John, your house is worth 6 million so I believe you have enough money that tomorrow you'll put your money where your mouth is and spend the 1.4 million dollars.
Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.
C'mon pretty boy you can save the worlds poor all on your own.
Hair spray will now have an 88% VAT.
Whew thanks... My self esteem was dipping wildly!
