Edwards: World poverty must end, rich must pay
Union Leader ^ | 3/15/2007 | JOHN DISTASO

Posted on 03/15/2007 3:25:08 PM PDT by nctexan

Goffstown – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.

The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a “good and moral thing,” but it would also make the United States safer.

“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated “in madrassas run by militant extremists.

“When you understand that,” he said, “it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States,” but also a “national security issue.” [snip]

While yet to produce a specific budget for his plan, Edwards estimated the U.S. would contribute $3 billion of an estimated $10 billion worldwide cost to bring “basic education” to 23 million children in impoverished nations by 2015.

He would commit $600 million for overseas health-related initiatives, including programs for clean water.

Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.

Wealthy Americans would foot the bill, Edwards said.

If not, go to hell!

Poverty will never go away. You can spend all you want and poverty will remain. The more you give them, the more they will want. Put them to work for the state. There are countys in Colorado that do that. If people want welfare, they have to work for the county to get it.

Not only that, money that leaves this country normally goes in the wrong persons pocket. We can't support the world nor should we. Look at Africa, they have been poor since the beginning of time. People of other nations have attempted to help them and they still carry shields and spears. Some people just can't be helped.

Don't you think that the number of dollars he is talking about spending are already being spent? AND MORE on the exact same stuff?

Sen. John Edwards, North Carolina Democrat and 2004 presidential hopeful, is four months delinquent in paying the property taxes on his Georgetown mansion and owes the cash-strapped District more than $11,000, city records show.
Mr. Edwards is worth somewhere between $12 million and $30 million after a successful career as a personal injury lawyer, according to his financial disclosure forms. He bought the eight-bedroom, 6,672-square-foot home in the tony neighborhood for $3.8 million in September.
In February, the city sent Mr. Edwards a tax bill for $9,562.46, which he was supposed to have paid by March 31, according to tax records. As of 3:30 p.m. yesterday, Mr. Edwards owed $11,092.46 with interest and penalties, according to the city's tax collection office.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This makes no sense as written, if they sent Crooked John a bill in February for taxes due by March 31 (which hasn't arrived yet as today is March 15) how in thunder can he be four months overdue and owe a lot of extra penalties? I think something has been left out, that is not unusual in the current era of "journalism". I never went past high school and if I couldn't write any better than most of these hacks I wouldn't be alive due to the fact that my mother would have skinned me. I would tend to think that they mean March 31 of last year but that would mean he would be a lot more than four months overdue so I can't make heads or tails of it.

CAUTION!!!! The preceding rant is not to be construed in any way as a defense of the silky haired maiden from North Carolina.

Let us start a worldwide fund with donations from the very rich. I volunteer Edwards as first huge donor. He can sell his mansion and donate the proceeds,
since he feels the need for WW help so deeply. He cannot feel this pain and fund it with our money, tho that is how he doubtless envisions doing it.

You do know that in Dem speak, anyone making 50 k or better per annum is the rich.

Oh really? Well what is the correlation between terrorists and poverty? Atta wasn't poor. Bin Laden certainly isn't poor. We don't have Africans and Indians coming over here as terrorists.
