Yep 60 is coming back to haunt them, it was intended, I think to be used in budget matters. Now it is a catch all which is unconstitutional.

...why does it need 60 for passage?

Technically it doesn't, but the democrats established that everything that Bush wanted to do would be filibustered, so everything has to pass a rule to allow voting. The vote is not on the bill, it is on the rule to allow voting.

That is they way they wanted it, so the Republicans just said, ok, the rules remain the same. It requires 2/3 to change the rules.

The GOP is using the cloture rule in the way it was meant to be used. I am proud of them for getting a small measure of revenge for when the 'Rats used it to hold up all of the President's judges.
Now that was unprecedented, but this issue is huge and paybacks are a bitch.

It's great news and kind of expected but I think the one surprising part was that it could get even a majority.

Correction; could not get a majority. Now the Senate just passed two non-bindings guaranteeing troop funding by 96-2. The Democrats must really be bipolar.

It requires 2/3 to change the rules.

No. It requires a simple majority. Recall that Frist kept calling it the nuclear option, but he never had the backbone to call for a vote on the rule.

More excellent news, their lunatic left wing base and their media are now going absolutely crazy. Can you imagine the anger and the rage they have against their very impotent and very weak party who simply cannot pass anything they want on the Iraq issue? Expect a new fabricated scandal coming soon from the democrats to shift the attention of their base and throw them some red meat to chew and hide their weakness and impotence on the Iraq issue.

Those Dummies are just too predictable. Every time they don't get their way they cry about it then start the impeachment crapola. They didn't even get a majority so they really can't complain about the Republicans or Presidents role.

You're right....the Dems are very predictable. When it comes to war -- their famous motto is "There is no substitute for defeat."

Yes, for once, the GOP stuck together..

It sure would be nice for MCCAIN to be around for a vote nowadays.

It seems the dems have decided that impeachment is the only "cure" for Iraq....LOL

The DU thread you linked to sounds like the many threads on FR before the dems got the majority. Our threads are much cleaner and civil but they are all ranting and raving as to why - if they are in the majority - they need 60 votes. I read a few "what good is having a majority" that brought me down memory lane. lol

Get a load of this hypocrisy.
I think the Senate should go back to the old school filibuster rules where to go through a filibuster they would actually have to get up and speak forever and ever. This gentlemanly filibuster BS is BS.
Like the last dozen years the Dems didn't do the same thing w/o a peep from the moonbats.

What's just as funny (to me anyway) is that the same sentiment was echoed here time and time again for the last dozen years and I bet I won't read it again until the R's regain the majority.

This woman is not just very nasty and very mean but very, very, very stupid. She said if she President (not going to happen) she will keep troops in Iraq to fight Al Qaeda and deter Iran but no be involved in civil war. This idiot does not understand the whole civil strife there is in Iraq it was planned, caused, executed, and still going on because of Al Qaeda and because of Iran, so in order to fight and defeat Al Qaeda and Iran in Iraq we have to be fully immersed in the war zones fighting them in the streets and destroying them.
