Giuliani Pitches Himself as a Can-Do Candidate (Dennis Miller calls Pelosi and Obey Morons!)
NY Sun ^ | 3/15/07 | Jill Gardiner

Mayor Giuliani, considered a front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, says America needs to expand its military and pitched himself as the candidate who would instill fear in the Iranian president.

"What I can do is get things done, accomplish things," the former mayor told a crowd of about 1,000 supporters at a baseball-themed fund-raiser at the Sheraton in Midtown last night. "People said New York was ungovernable. We governed it and it became the best example of urban renaissance."

Saying he is "impatient and singled-minded" about his goals, he told the crowd that he'd bring the same focus to the White House to lower taxes, reduce spending, achieve energy independence, and improve international relations. He said the country needs a "bigger military" that can handle both large attack and "multiple complex limited actions," and said it was time to capture Osama bin Laden.

Mr. Giuliani was introduced by comedian Dennis Miller, who used at least one expletive when joking about the lack of trustworthy evidence to back up claims of global warming. In a performance that felt something like an HBO standup special, Mr. Miller also called two Democrats, including the speaker of the House of Representatives, "morons" and "inconsequential people who don't take the threat to our culture seriously."

"When you watch morons like Nancy Pelosi and David Obey of Wisconsin discussing our pullout from Iraq, the other day, they make like eight errors in four seconds," the comedian said ...

My CONFIRMATION came through a guy on the NYPD.
I wasn't alleging that he took NYPD guns away.

I'd never do that, because everybody knows that Rudy thinks only cops and political cronies and celebrities should have guns in NYC.

No, I just think it's funny that he stood up to Arafat (apparently to howls of protest) but was forced against his will to march in the Gay Pride Parade.

I'll need someone to explain when Rudy stands up to evil, and when he marches with it, so we know what to expect.

You don't know me, so making a statement like that is foolish.

He stood up against the obvious enemies, but caves to The Brady Bunch, The Queer Nation, NRAL, and other established AMERICAN groups. Do you really think standing up against Arafat, Castro and a dung painting of The Virgin Mary makes him a Conservative hero? You're easily fooled.

When it comes to NATIONAL issues, Rudy's record is abysmal.

We can, and hopefuly WILL, do better.

The assertion was made repeatedly that Giuliani had no choice but to march in the Gay Pride parade because it had become "tradition" and it would be politically damaging to refuse to do so. As a result, he wound up participating in a parade in which NAMBLA marched.

Since we're constantly being told what a tough guy Rudy is and how he "stands up" to his enemies I thought it certainly demonstrates a lack of political courage.

Considering that dozens of politicians in NYC refuse to march in the St. Patrick's Day parade in protest of the Hibernian's refusal to allow homosexuals to march in the parade under their own banner, it seems particularly apt.

"GO back to DU!"

I just love how, for the Rudybots, anyone who opposes him is really a secret DU spy -- even people who have been here since 1998.

Seriously, people: take your horribly selective lists that avoid mention Rudy's countless liberal policy actions, along with your reflex anger posts, and grow up.

All Political figures have to deal with gays in one way or another. Look what Reagan did for Teachers from the National Review:

Reagan publicly demonstrated this outlook when he opposed Proposition 6, a 1978 ballot measure that called for the dismissal of California teachers who "advocated" homosexuality, even outside of schools. Reagan used both a September 24, 1978, statement and a syndicated newspaper column to campaign against the initiative.

"Whatever else it is," Reagan wrote, "homosexuality is not a contagious disease like the measles. Prevailing scientific opinion is that an individual's sexuality is determined at a very early age and that a child's teachers do not really influence this." He also argued: "Since the measure does not restrict itself to the classroom, every aspect of a teacher's personal life could presumably come under suspicion. What constitutes 'advocacy' of homosexuality? Would public opposition to Proposition 6 by a teacher — should it pass — be considered advocacy?"

That November 7, Proposition 6 lost, 41.6 percent in favor to 58.4 percent against. Reagan's opposition is considered instrumental to its defeat.

It's one thing to let people be.
It's another thing to march in their parades as a show of support.

Garv, you seem to have a fascination with apples and oranges as well as homosexuals. I wonder what that signifies.

First of all NAMBLA is disgusting and the gay community should be ashamed of allowing them in their parade. However, you are asking Rudy to insult the NYC gay community to protest a minor faction.

Second, homosexuals are not Rudy's enemy. (Although I often find the political ones rather annoying, they are not my enemies either). They are potential voters. The islofascists are the enemy.

Third, if you are more concerned with homosexuals than islamofascists, I suggest therapy or pastoral counseling. You need to get your priorities in order.

And, to use a tactic of some Rudy Rooters:

"Who cares?! That's ancient history! Do you have anything more recent?"

Sorry, but I've heard it many a time right here ;)

Abso-damn-lutely.

Name another high-profile politician who did this.

. . . relatively sane, and not obsessed with hating Rudy and gays I assume the 1984 in your screen name indicates your fondness for the kind of doublespeak which describes the left-wing New Yorker as a "conservative."

I can't think of one who didn't.
The fact was that these issues were localized to NYC and he was the mayor. Standing up to these guys had minimal political downside and made great copy for Rudy.

But, when it came to standing up for constitutional rights of citizens, he balked.

Dear Professor,

I am guesing that English Literature is not your field of study. George Orwell coined the terms "Newspeak" and "double think". You have conflated the two.

There are few better than Mr. Orwell. I highly recommend his 2 books of essays. Almost everyone can benefit from fully appreciating that clear writing is a direct function of clear thinking.

BTW, You never answered my question. Are you a tenured faculty member? If so, what is your field of expertise?

I had a colleague like you once. Pompous kiss-ass. Oh, yeah, I was tenured and a full prof . . . and then I retired at 52 so I'd have time to do a little bit of good before I died.

How foolish and angry you are, dear sir. People sometimes describe me as arrogant but never pompous. I am one of the least "kiss ass" people you will ever meet, although I am trying to be more diplomatic in my older years.

We seem to be narrowing things down. Clearly, psychology was not your field of study. I wonder what school you were at. Most of the faculty I have known were pompous a**holes. Yet, you seem to remember only a single colleague as such.

The persona you have constructed (as with your logic and reading comprehension) seems to be in need of work. BTW, can you point out a post where I described Rudy as a "conservative"?

Newt Gingrich was one who spoke out against the elephant dung fiasco. Saw it for myself during a televised interiew. Even Newt knew it was easy to side against the museum and wasn't much of a political gamble.

You're painting yourself into a corner if you thing that Rudy was the only "conservative" who was outraged at that, or similar, events. This stuff was well publicized and didn't offer much of a challenge to any real conservative, or anybody merely claiming to be conservative.

I can go to any other city and ask where Rudy was on THEIR issues. Where was Rudy during the Rodney King trial or riots? Where was Rudy when Budson and Nevers went to prison? On the issues that really divided conservatives from pretenders, Rudy split the difference and even crossed the line.

To reiterate my reasoning; this isn't personal against Rudy. It's not that we don't like him, we just don't like his positions on some of the most divisive and deciding issues facing America (not NYC, but America) today.

People probably don't bother describing you as pompous because they don't think you are worth the bother. Like most Rudybots.

I forgot to mention that I respect and admire your reason for retiring. I turned down a tenure-track position because I couldn't stand the inane, repetitve, trivial and self-congratulatory nature of the academy. I hope the experience did not leave you with lasting emotional damage.
