Filthy conditions cited at abortion clinic

Metropolitan Medical Associates, an Englewood clinic that performs thousands of abortions a year. The clinic was ordered closed on by state health officials until it corrects the "immediate and serious" risks.

State health officials found forceps encrusted in "brownish blood-like residues," rusty crochet hooks used to remove IUDs, and a quarter-inch of dark red "dirt and debris" under an exam table at an Englewood abortion clinic, according to records released Tuesday.  The records revealed publicly for the first time why the clinic was closed on Feb. 24, after a two-day investigation.  Health officials found that the clinic "could not provide evidence" of an infection-control plan, nor an infection-control specialist responsible for day-to-day oversight. Though the clinic had a letter on file appointing a particular employee as the infection-control professional, that employee told health inspectors that he or she was not familiar with the letter of appointment, "not that I recall right now." The employee also had not been trained or certified in prevention and control of infections, in defiance of state law.

It also found sterilized items were not stored or handled to maintain their sterility. Investigators found that packs of sterilized instruments, which aren't to be opened until just before their use, had been unsealed and left open in storage. Elsewhere, they found open packs of sterilized speculums, scissors, forceps and clamps.  The report also found: "Two plastic open top bins of sterile forceps, speculum and gauze prep kits are stored directly on the carpeted floor next to the copier in the main office." Elsewhere, surgical instruments were found in the same drawer as light bulbs.

The clinic also failed to train housekeeping personnel upon hire and annually about proper cleaning procedures and equipment care, as required by law.  "There was a large dark orangish-yellow stained area, dirt, debris, and syringe caps found under the operating tables in operating rooms #1, 2, 3 and 4," the report said. "Employee #2 stated, 'We do not usually move these tables. The housekeeper cleans around the O.R. tables a couple of times a week.' "Representatives of the health department and the clinic say the clinic is working hard to remedy the deficiencies and hoping to reopen swiftly. Last week, the clinic told authorities it had corrected the major problems, but the state didn't agree.

"It is clear that facility is going through an extremely rigorous review," said Frank Capece, attorney for the clinic, one of the busiest in the state. "We can debate whether that is arbitrary or necessary, but it's a moot point. It is the intention of the facility to be in full compliance with all requirements. And it's my perception that everyone's working in good faith. ... There's no doubt that we're being held to a strict standard, a tougher standard than any other facility that we know of." The closure was only the second one the department ordered over the last five years against any of state's 619 ambulatory-care facilities for "deficient care."

The state's investigation was spurred by a complaint by a Newark hospital, after it performed emergency surgery on a hemorrhaging woman after an abortion at Metropolitan Medical. On Feb. 2, state health officials investigated the clinic.  In separate records released Tuesday, investigators concluded the facility failed to notify the department "of an event occurring within the facility that jeopardized the health and safety of a patient." The department refused to release details of the "event."  The department also found that the patient's medical and operative records were incomplete.     "The operative report was not immediately completed following the procedure because Staff Member #1 reported being 'superstitious' and was aware that Patient #1 had emergency surgery performed and was waiting for the results," investigators wrote. The patient has since sued for malpractice.  The probe after her abortion prompted the health department to investigate more fully on Feb. 22 and 23. It was that survey that prompted the closure.

"immediate and serious risks"

Especially if you haven't been born yet. So much for SAFE and legal. All they care about is the latter.

Abortion: the only medical procedure where over 50% of the patients are guaranteed to die horrible deaths.

The pro-abortion crowd used to crow that abortions should be both rare and safe. Obviously, neither is true.

The ACLU, NOW, NARAL, Democrat Party death cult have worked for years to keep normal oversight and health reviews away from their abortuaries. [They murder humans there, what do they give a damn if it's clean and sterile? And we defenders of tha alive unborn being murdered there should keep our mouths shut and leave them to their profits.]

What difference does it make? These institutions exist only to kill babies. Why would they need sanitary conditions?

"... There's no doubt that we're being held to a strict standard, a tougher standard than any other facility that we know of."

Yeah, all the other places are allowed to KEEP their quarter-inch deep, dark red goop under their exam tables.

Actually, I stand corrected - he's right, they are being held to a higher standard than anyone else - abortion clinics that is - because usually there are no inspections/oversight at all. One NJ clinic inspected, about 30 more to go.

Tough that people who come there to murder their own children have to be endangered by filth. Looks good on them from here.

Time to close this one down, folks. Go and pray outside the clinic (usually across the street from them)!

The argument that was being made for legal abortion in 1973 was the idea that if abortion were legal no more women would be dead or injured from abortion. The fact is that because of NARAL's insistence that abortion clinics should not be regulated or inspected, the back alley was allowed to relocate to the clinics. I would argue that there are now more deaths and injuries to women because they falsely believe that legal means safe. Abortion doctors (the ones that are actual doctors) are the bottom of the barrel of the medical profession. They are usually shunned by their peers. They are low-skilled misfits (and probably sociopaths)who don't qualify to work in any other medical venue. Often they are elderly men in their 70's in 80's who can't get patients in the normal way because no one wants and old doctor. And besides, they lost their hospital privileges years ago because of age-related incompetence.
Imagine lying on a table with your feet in stirrups when in walks an 84 year old in a white coat, hands shaking with Parkinson's disease, who sits down at the end of the table and picks up the sharp instruments. And the abortion industry tries to cover up the emergency hysterectomies requred later. Abortion in itself is inherently dangerous to women, even when performed by someone competent - never mind what it does to babies.
