Bill Simon, an unsuccessful 2002 California gubernatorial candidate, former federal prosecutor under Giuliani and bedrock social conservative, delivered a spirited intro.
"He comforted us. He inspired us in what was one of the darkest moments in our history," Simon said, extolling Giuliani's leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "Extraordinary times cry out for extraordinary leadership, and these as such times."
"It would be fair to say that Bill Simon is using his personal cachet to vouch for Giuliani," said Jon Fleischman, a conservative Republican activist and publisher of the Flash Report political newsletter. "Giuliani is a moderate on social issues, yet Simon has been a champion to conservatives on those same issues.
"When I talk to conservatives supporting Giuliani, many of them say, 'I'm putting my faith on what Bill Simon says.' "
First he told a hotel ballroom crowded with conservative GOP delegates that his former boss was "a fellow Ronald Reagan Republican," who cut taxes, cleaned up New York and put "countless career criminals behind bars."
He said Simon explained that Giuliani opposes partial-birth abortions and tax-funded abortions and _ though Giuliani supports domestic partnerships _ he believes marriage is strictly between man and a woman.
"If he (Simon) is endorsing Giuliani, it makes some members of the conservative wing of the party feel safer," said Gaines, a Giuliani convert. "I did have concerns. But with the explanation of how he (Giuliani) would view Supreme Court appointments, I have a level of comfort."

OK..that's your right, and possibly you will once again prove the maxim that Americans elect the government they deserve.
In fact, if Bill Richardson was running as a Dem and Giuliani was the Pubbie candidate, I'd vote for Richardson...and in 32 years of voting I have NEVER, ever, one single time, voted for a Dem!
Ed
My wife and I both agree with you, we would vote for Richardson.
In my case it will be 44 years in 2008 and never once voted for a Dem for president.
Bill Simon is a wimp...
Giuliani dresses up like girls and lived with two homosexuals.
Stupid people...
Isn't it sad to see the GOP reduced to this state?
ONLY gun control, abortion, gay rights and immigration?
You mean the 2nd Amendment when you say "gun control". Only a liberal pansy ass thinks that the 2nd amendment is any more negotiable than the the other 9 amendments. You dismiss it because Rudy is PATHETICALLY anti-constitution in this matter ("hunter's rights"...yeah, that's the tickiet, not only violating the constitutional rights of NYers, but trying his damndest to put those eeeevil gun manufacturers out of bizness with his ridiculous big government, nanny state law suits. Hunter gets an A from the NRA.
You mean the sanctity of human life when you say "abortion". You dismiss it because you do not like pondering that your liberal Rudy not only supports Partial Birth Abortion (known as infantacide), but he also wants GOVERNMENT FUNDING for abortions, to make sure poor women can afford this oh so vital "right" to murder their child. When you say "gay rights", what you really mean is the radical, leftist gay AGENDA, that includes teaching gradeschool kids about anal sex, letting Tommy and Franky get married, letting Tommy and Franky adopt and raise children, shitcanning the military's prohibition on open homosexuality, classifying gays as a protected class of citizens subject to "hate crimes" (read thought crimes) legislation, and letting NAMBLA exist. Hunter opposes this left wing bile, Rudy is their biggest cheerleader, no wonder you dismiss it.
When you say immigration, what you mean is ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, which is illegal for a reason. You dismiss it because Rudy (Mr. law and order) not only supports illegal immigration, but was willing to break federal laws to protect those criminals from deportation. Hunter builds fences, Rudy builds sanctuaries.
Not only that, Hunter supporters also rightly believe that the best man for CIC right now in the WOT and the coming future confrontations with our enemies is not a non military mayor of a liberal city, but a legitimate military expert, Armed Services chairman, Army Ranger, and key adviser to multiple Presidents on matters of war. In addition, he is the ONLY one sounding the alarm bells about the chicoms evil intentions, has been an aggressive tax cutter his entire tenure in congress, has taken on the ACLU instead of coopting its radical agenda, and is a Reaganite to the core.
Trying to paint Hunter as a liberal is so patently absurd, you should be ashamed of yourself. Just because the Club for Growth loves surrendering to China, doesn't mean a true conservative would. Did Reagan want trade agreements with our enemies to give them strategic advantages?
Americans don't even elect the government, they let the MSM and Party elites set up two bad choices, then about 30% of the loonies Plus an untold number of dead people install the government that they think we deserve.
We allow it because we don't give a crap about the purpose of the 2nd.
You seem to suffer under the delusion that whom you pick will actually change something for the better.
Note GW's South American tour this week, and the totally traitorous remarks he made in several speeches. Unless of course you believe that our Nation should no longer be sovereign. In that case then he is your guy and whomever they pick to replace him will be your guy too.
You are so right! I'm tired of our guys being "gentlemanly"; there's a place for that but not in dealing with the Congress. How many good guys have we lost because they said something inappropriate or made foolish mistakes and stepped down? I know you know all their names!
And how many have the dimwits lost? Not Kennedy, Not Studds, not Frank--the list is endless.
Rudy won't put up with any B.S.
*applauds* Well said pissant.
I agree, that was particularly well said. From the tone of the exchanges on this thread it looks like more heat than light, a typical rudy thread.
As a Duncan Hunter supporter I am choosing not to engage in debate on this Rudy Giuliani thread on Free Republic. As a freeper I am disappointed that there are fans of a liberal presidential candidate trying to push socially liberal views on this socially conservative forum. In particular, I have noticed that the Rudy G fans do not answer posts questioning the qualitative substance of their candidate, or the posts are met merely with insults.

What to say about this rant? I remember you as being more sensible than this. Your defense of Hunter is solid (only problem is, it isn't worth much unless he can be elected), but your attack on Rudy is not. Regardless of what you think of Rudy, some of the accusations you make against him are ludicrous. I oppose Hunter, but try to be fair to him. Please try to be fair to Rudy.
I guess this is what now passes for the sentiments of "traditional values social conservatism." How "Christian" of you.
I was born and raised in nyc and can tell you there is plenty of nonhuman garbage there, too.
