Bill Simon (CA conservative) soothes conservatives' concerns over Giuliani
Scripps News ^ | March 14, 2007 | PETER HECHT

Posted on 03/14/2007 4:21:46 PM PDT by FairOpinion

Bill Simon, an unsuccessful 2002 California gubernatorial candidate, former federal prosecutor under Giuliani and bedrock social conservative, delivered a spirited intro.

"He comforted us. He inspired us in what was one of the darkest moments in our history," Simon said, extolling Giuliani's leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "Extraordinary times cry out for extraordinary leadership, and these as such times."

"It would be fair to say that Bill Simon is using his personal cachet to vouch for Giuliani," said Jon Fleischman, a conservative Republican activist and publisher of the Flash Report political newsletter. "Giuliani is a moderate on social issues, yet Simon has been a champion to conservatives on those same issues.

"When I talk to conservatives supporting Giuliani, many of them say, 'I'm putting my faith on what Bill Simon says.' "

First he told a hotel ballroom crowded with conservative GOP delegates that his former boss was "a fellow Ronald Reagan Republican," who cut taxes, cleaned up New York and put "countless career criminals behind bars."

He said Simon explained that Giuliani opposes partial-birth abortions and tax-funded abortions and _ though Giuliani supports domestic partnerships _ he believes marriage is strictly between man and a woman.

"If he (Simon) is endorsing Giuliani, it makes some members of the conservative wing of the party feel safer," said Gaines, a Giuliani convert. "I did have concerns. But with the explanation of how he (Giuliani) would view Supreme Court appointments, I have a level of comfort."

Mr. Giuliani, would you please explain to us how Tower 7 came tumbling down while you were mayor of New York City?

There's no guarantee Rudy will be fiscally conservative since he won't owe conservatives a damn thing.

Whether Rudy is fiscally conservative or not really doesn't matter. It's Congress that controls the purse and they'll start controlling spending around the time Ted Kennedy controls his drinking.

Unless, of course, Rudy or any other POTUS breaks out the veto pen and shuts down the Government until they get in line. Unfortunately, even RWR wasn't able to do that.

I'm more concerned about who is C-in-C and who appoints SCOTUS Justices. That is what Presidents do.

Firm but subtle.

I know how mad you were when Schottenheimer got the boot in San Diego. AJ Smith's ears are probably still ringing, and he's still picking up his phone.

:)

Do you think that is a monumental coincidence or a deliberate conspiracy?

These polls are plain horse droppings.

(1) Most of them are internet-based, which means they're unscientific and has zero credibility

(2) They exclude all of the other GOP candidates besides McCain, Romney, and Giuliani

(3) The rest of the polls are generated by the usual suspects in the MSM, to try and demoralize conservatives and fatten up Giuliani for the general

We're debating the issues on this, a conservative debate forum. Most of the activists who vote in the GOP primaries are also, politically conservative. In the regard, posting Rudy`s lack of strong support on FR is relevant to the debate right now. Especially, when there hasn't been one debate or one primary held to date.

Haley as VP... Hmmm, I could go along with that.

Haley is a good man. I've always liked him, especially when he was GOP Chairman. That's when I really got to know him.

FR polls are relevant when looking at conservative support among GOP primary activists. I suggest you also look at the poll over at GOPUSA. Over 14,000 votes cast and Newt came in first, followed by Duncan Hunter.

Unless conservatives continue ignoring Rudy`s liberal record, a whole lotta folks are gonna be surprised at the outcome of the GOP primaries a year from now.

He's always said he's not interested, but I intend to ask anyway. I'll look for the look in his eye or a small smile. A "tell" if you will. :0)

And I think Rudy will be a fiscal conservative.

So do I. I also think Rudy *gets it* about personal freedom. The United States of America is not a religion it is a country. In the United States we have the freedom to make good choices and bad choices and to establish our own principles. We are NOT required to accept Alan Keyes' principles or anyone here's principles. And people are free to adhere to their own principles. That is the sign of a person with character - someone who adheres to their principles - even when no one is looking. It is not the case that everyone in the United States must have the same principles. That is bizarre thinking - it is mentally unbalanced thinking.

Conservatism is about personal freedom and limited government. Getting government out of people's lives as much as is possible.

"Rudy is human garbage just like the city he comes from."

Another savvy comment from the hate brigade.

If you believe that FR is a fair proxy for Republican primary voters then I'm not sure I can reach your planet from here. I'll have to get a larger satellite dish.

Here's a hint: Ah-nold is not helping to move the CA Primary to Feb 5 to assist Duncan Hunter.

None of the Republican candidates with the possible exception of Ron Paul are even addressing this.

Seems to have gone to the dustbin along with the term limit movement.

As a matter of fact, I never thought that Simon would win in CA due to his conservative positions. Not because I didn't agree with his positions, but rather because the odds of a conservative like Simon to win a statewide election in CA are very long, since CA voters on balance aren't notably conservative and a strong conservative needs to win over independent voters - a difficult task.

In any event, I'm glad he's helping Rudy is CA.
