Editor Who Dropped Coulter Column Describes Strong Backlash (imagine that)

NEW YORK Last week, at least seven daily newspapers around the country announced that they had decide to drop Ann Coulter's column in the wake of her latest offensive comment, a reference to former Sen. John Edwards in which she used the term "faggot." An eighth paper has now cut the column: The Herald and Review in Decatur, Ill.

Another paper, The State Journal Register in Springfield, Ill., is weighing that move and is asking readers to weigh in -- and has been swamped with pro and con responses.

Coulter's syndicate, Universal, has said it has no plans to drop her.

One of the first to announce its move was the Mountain Press in Sevierville, Tenn. In a column today, its editor, Stan Voit, explains, "I've been a newspaperman for most of the last 35 years. But I admit I have never encountered anything like the reaction to this paper dropping Ann Coulter's column. You'd have thought we came out against Christmas or SEC football."

In all, the piece announcing the paper's decision drew over 250 comments, with most of them coming from outside the area. The first posted comment on Voit's piece today, however, was positive.

Excerpts from Voit's column today follows. *

From the start I began hearing it from Democrats and Republicans who object to her style and tone. I defended her and our decision to carry her column in the face of a lot of heat generated by those in both parties locally who didn't want her column in their hometown paper.

As I read her column each week to get it formatted for publication, I became more and more bothered by her incendiary one-liners, the lack of depth in her commentary. Her column seemed more about getting cheap laughs than offering analysis.

The paper just wants to get along, it is as PC as they come, selectively censoring to suit there liberal agenda.

Thank you. They censored her. They just don't have the guts to admit it.

Guess Stan would have a cow, if he heard Lenny Bruce's skits.

Rush, Levin, Larry Elder, Mike Gallagher, Thomas Sowell - no knotted panties.

Hugh Hewitt, Michelle Malkin, Bill Bennett, etc - knotted panties.

Add Hannity to the no knotted panties list.

The troll above posted this trying to put words into Hannity's mouth:

Sean Hannity announcement at the end of Hanity's America: Coulter on Hannity & Colmes Monday night, March 5th.

If Ann makes any comment other than a sincere apology she will be making a fool of herself trying to defend the indefensible.

This "defending the indefensible" trope has been repeated by all the Malkinites here--in claim of being the 'true conservatives." Malkin is nothing but a mendacious twit trying to gain attention at the expense of AC.

"Now I all I can think about is Michelle Malkin's panties. Thanks a lot!"

This will cure ya -- Janet Reno's panties. Yikes!

They can't drop Coulter's column in my paper, because they've never run her columns anyway. Or very few conservative columnists. I get a daily dose of E.J. Dionne, Trudy Rubin, David Broder, et al. They print Garrulous Squealer on Sundays as the humor columnist. And this is a relatively small midwestern rag.

Just think; many, many eons ago, God, in his infinite wisdom, created the birds of the air and the fish of the sea so that your local newspaper would serve a purpose.

And this is a relatively small midwestern rag.

A lot of these local papers are owned now by Gannett (the USA today, people). We can't post those articles here of course, but the corporate people that run the locals are all unreconstructed superannuated hippie lefties.

my local rag has all of yours, and runs G. Will and (kathryn j. lopez?) from time to time as the right winger de jour. I can't really cancel the sub as I generally read the police blotter and obits in it, but the editorial columns sound like the old Pravda.

"police blotter and obit"

That's generally the only thing worth reading in my rag too. I wouldn't subscribe, but the wife gets it for the coupons. So I guess it does have some worth. The funny thing is the paper was arch-conservative when I was growing up in the sixties. But like you stated, the current editor is a far-left nut, and that's what we get for political "news".

Ann didn't say Edwards was a faggot, she said she would get sent to rehab if she were to say such a thing. She's probably surprised to learn what happens when she even speculates about doing such a thing.

Her statement did strongly imply that he is a faggot.
She should apologize; Faggots don't deserve that kind of abuse.

I did not say a word about FR or anyone else writing letters to the paper. We all have the right to do that. I was responding to someone who accused the paper of censorship because they decided to pull Coulter's column. It is not censorship.

if libs want to say its censorship for people to stop buying Dixie Chick music, then they have to call it censorship to drop Ann's column...

but then, libs never minded about double standards.

btw, I agree... dropping her column is not censorship.
