As last weekend approached, more and more people were asking me: Do you think Fred Thompson will run for president?
My answer each time: not a chance.
Then on Sunday, there was Mr. Thompson on Fox saying he's open to the possibility and will consider it.
Whoops.
What happened?
I wasn't making stuff up when I expressed doubt. I spoke with the former senator in New York six months ago as various broadcasters gathered for the fifth anniversary of 9/11.

Hopefully he will run.
If not, Ron Paul is a very good conservative.
Fred Thompson on immigration??
Earth to Davis -- Mr. Thompson already did that back in 1994.
I just glanced at the article, but Davis thinks Giuliani and Romney will muscle Thompson out. How about that big, glaring hole that every conservative dreams about having filled? Thompson, someone with lots of stature and name recognition, could do just that.
I think Marc Davis has underestimated the very strong interest in a Thompson candidacy. He's going to be saying "whoops" again.
This guy is politically tone deaf as well as blind to what's really happening in conservative circles. The so called 3 front runners are all unacceptable to the vast majority of conservatives and are just waiting for someone who reflect their core beliefs and has start power
Cluelss is an understatement in describing this article.
HELLO !!! - it's March of 2007 - it's too early for anyone to be convinced of anything.
Take a candidate - take positions - then allow time to convince all of us who our candidate will be.
Too many people are acting like the election is this November.
Relax - allow for possibilities - with every candidate.
There are a million links around FR to various sources on Fred Thompson's voting record and comments. Here's a little info:
* Voted YES on allowing more foreign workers into the US for farm work. (Jul 1998)
* Voted YES on visas for skilled workers. (May 1998)
* Voted YES on limit welfare for immigrants. (Jun 1997)
Fred says we need to do it in steps. Not all at once.
And first secure the borders.
Go Fred!
He's not a wimpy finger-in-the-wind kiss-up like W....
Yes, he did. He made new comments on that specific topic Sunday morning. Go check it out.
Absolutely. Why would anyone feel that they had to be convinced nearly a year before the primaries and about 18 months before we actually vote.
With zero chance of winning. The guy is also a defeatist on the war on terror and he wants to surrender to the terrorist.
"Earth to Davis -- Mr. Thompson already did that back in 1994."
Not to mention that he was on the Watergate committee in 1974.
If not, Ron Paul is a very good conservative.
I would like to see Thompson get into the race too. But as for Dr. Paul, he voted for that democRAT travesty non-binding resolution on Iraq. I live in his district, and he will not be receiving my vote for President, Congress, or dog catcher.
I agree. It seems like its the JulieAnnie-Apologists on here that are downplaying (and in some cases slamming) Fred as a potential candidate.
