Poll: Giuliani leads the GOP pack (& more on conservative endorsements Olson and Vitter)
CNN ^ | March 12, 2007 | CNN

Giuliani is the preferred candidate for 34 percent of likely Republican voters, according to the poll. Giuliani has a double-digit lead over his nearest rival, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who is the choice candidate for 18 percent of potential Republican voters.

Conservative endorsements

In a move to attract conservatives skeptical of his position on social issues such as gun control, abortion rights and same-sex civil unions, Giuliani's campaign Monday announced endorsements from Sen. David Vitter, R-Louisiana, and former Solicitor General Ted Olson.

"Obviously, I disagree with Rudy on some significant social issues, and these are very important to me and to many people I represent," said Vitter, a vocal opponent of abortion, gay marriage and gun control.

"But after numerous personal meetings with the mayor, it's very clear to me that he's not running for president to advance any liberal social agenda," he said.

Olson, who served with Giuliani in the Reagan Justice Department, said he believes the former mayor "will appoint the kind of judges that we expect in this country -- people that respect the rule of law and the role of judges and who interpret the laws and interpret the Constitution, instead of judges who want to make policy."

Only thing Rudy has going in his favor, he might split the New York Vote. Don't get your shorts all knotted up, we have a long way to go, and there might be a better Candidate waiting in the wings..( Fred Thompson)

I would be looking at some money being spread around. There is absolutely no reason for any conservative to support Rudy unless they are getting some quid pro quo.

So, senator Vitter's endorsement means nothing to you. I see. Then you must have a personal animosity for Mr. Giuliani that goes beyond any concern there might be for political success against the 'rats.

Because of this conservative spitting contest among the purist we're all supposed to roll over for Mrs. Clinton?

Not gonna happen.

And why do we immediately give up and try to nominate the most FAR left candidate as possible BEFORE the primary. If Giulani does gain nomination regardless of our support for the most conservative candidate, we could still support him.

Rudy is conservative on fiscal, domestic, foreign policy, and supports strict constructionist judges. Also, honestly I believe Rudy is the only Republican currently running right now I feel can win the general election. Like Reagan said, I'll take 75% over nothing.

Rudy is so much more likeable than Hillary
I don't think it will even be close between them.

"So name someone other than Rudy who CAN beat Hillary and provide better leadership than Rudy."

Fred Thompson.

I agree but he better get in the race soon or the money will follow another candidate.

You should reserve your animosity for actual liberals and not for someone who happens to support a different Republican candidate than you do for president.

Rudy is as far left as Republicans get.

Pro Illegal, Pro Abortion, Pro Gay, Anti 2nd amendment.

Strict constructionist judges??? Why on earth would a politician lie while in the midst of campaigning...

"Simple logic -- it's amazing the way some people around here keep ignoring reality. Peter Pan syndrome."

I agree. We CAN'T have what we want. Newt Gingrich, for example, is NEVER, EVER, **** EVER **** going to win the Presidency. He was demonized for SO many years by the MSM that he might as well be Dan Quayle.. it just ISN'T going to happen, and we NEED to keep Her Highness out of office. Our best shot at that is putting up someone who's generally popular among people in the middle, or people not savvy with politics, or even some of the less demented Leftists. I'm prepared to hold my nose and vote for someone who DOESN'T believe in everything I believe (that abortion is murder, for example), because, as of now, I don't feel we have anyone else who can beat the Democrats, who believe in NOTHING I believe.

Did you know that Fred Thompson supported McCain against Bush?

Did you know, that Baker, who is pushing Thompson into the race is a big McCain supporter?

Does it occur to you that Fred Thompson entering the race would split the Republican vote just enought to maybe get McCain nominated, with the obvious result of Hillary being elected?

Thompson is a Ross Perot play, inside the Republican primary.

Why I never said he was lying I simply stated Rudy's positions, by his actions he shall be judged.

Small government conservatives do not support:

At least NARAL supports him enough to donate to him.

Ah, yes, the polls. What you do not realize that when Rudy is nominated the Dems will open up the relentless bombardment, not one second sooner. They WANT Rudy because he is sitting on top of a ammunition stockpile.

You know I would agree with this line of reasoning except for one thing, I would expect the bombardment to begin during the primary season or sooner and those throwing the bombs Rudy's' way will be the other Republican candidates.

---"You should reserve your animosity for actual liberals and not for someone who happens to support a different Republican candidate than you do for president.'---

My animosity is targeted at Liberals, and those who harbor and support them. I make no distinction between the domestic enemy, and those who harbor and support them.

Rudy is a domestic enemy, and he will be treated as such - EVEN if he wins the nod for the new-look, progressive GOP.

Vitter has sold his soul for VP consideration, nothing more and nothing less.

A president Giuliani might appoint a lawyer Olsen to an opening on the Supreme Court - he could do worse......

This isn't directed specifically at you, FairOpinion - but I'm wondering how the anti-Rudy crowd would feel about a Giuliani/Thompson ticket.
