I starting looking at bids last night. We subscribe to a service called input (government bids).

Amazing what goes out for bids, isn't it? And the specs....definitely causes one to understand how the famous '$600 toilet seat' came about. Thank heavens the DEMS and LIBS haven't figured out that this excellent opportunity for the thriving of the free enterprise system is alive and well, or they would end it immediately. More than a few people have built successful businesses (and were honest in doing so!) by providing services as a result of bidding (I speak from experience). All the best to you.

The "$600 toilet seat" is a creation of Congress. Congress mandated that every piece of equipment delivered on a defense contract include its share of the entire cost of research, development, and creation of all manufacturing facilities. So the cost of the toilet seat is calculated in the following way:
purchased toilet seat $ 5
pro-rata cost of R&D $595
total cost of line item toilet seat $600

The same thing happens with a $5 hammer and a $25 coffee pot.

Then Democrats loudly complain that the US taxpayer is getting ripped off by the evil military industrial complex.
