NY TIMES PLANS TUESDAY HIT ON GORE, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE: 'Scientists argue that Gore's warnings are full of exaggerated claims and startling errors'... Developing..
From a Rapt Audience, a Call to Cool the Hype
"Hollywood has a thing for Al Gore and his three-alarm film on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth, which won an Academy Award for best documentary. So do many environmentalists, who praise him as a visionary, and many scientists, who laud him for raising public awareness of climate change.
But part of his scientific audience is uneasy. In talks, articles and blog entries that have appeared since his film and accompanying book came out last year, these scientists argue that some of Mr. Gores central points are exaggerated and erroneous. They are alarmed, some say, at what they call his alarmism.
I dont want to pick on Al Gore, Don J. Easterbrook, an emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University, told hundreds of experts at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. But there are a lot of inaccuracies in the statements we are seeing, and we have to temper that with real data..."

>>I'm 45, been around the block, read my science books, kept up to date. I do not recall ever seeing any serious investigations, evidence or proof that our seas are rising. Conjecture, yes, but real-life evidence or even widespread concern, no.
Is it stone-cold scientific fact that sea levels are rising, or just more hypothesis? Again, no direspect, but I'm skeptical of this.<<
I don't see it as remotely disrespectful to ask about sources and documentation.
And obviously I have not done the research myself.
But in looking at this sort of thing I tend to look for trustworthy researchers who were working on the field before it became a hot political topic.
So yes, looking at the various sources it looks like the oceans are rising very slowly - about 3mm a year - thats a little less than 1/12 of an inch. With about half of the rise coming from the melt of ice that sits on land and half from the way water expands slightly as it warms up.
I'm watching a special on global warming - they lead off with a picture of New York City under 80 feet (960 inches) of water. The most water in New York city over the last 160,000 years would place it 20 feet under water.
At the current rate that would take 8000 years. 960 / 0.118110236 = 8 128.00002
NASA, the NOAA and the NSF, the three groups I trust most have estimates that the rate for the next century may increase by a factor of 2-3.
Suppose the rate does triple and we are looking for when the water rises not 80 feet but just 8 feet. That would take 270 years.
So this is real. Its happening. But we can easily take time to see what the causes are.
Check this graph from NASA - it shows the sea levels rising as, measured by NASAs Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). GRACE precisely measures surface height not only of the worlds ocean, but also the giant bodies of ice.
The slope looks steep but that's if you look at the scale you can see its in millimeters. So, yes, the sea is rising very slowly.
Now, there have been much faster shifts in the past so no one can promise it won't change faster in the future but right now the rise in sea level is slow enough that we have plenty of time to study.

Well...maybe Big Al has a few juicy tidbits on Mrs. Bill Clinton, too.

Al "I buy carbon offsets from my own company" Gore is toast, anyway. I don't quite get these carbon offsents... If I promise not to fly a private jet will rich liberals pay me? Even better, what if I promised not to buy the jet in the first place? Is that worth more?
Or is this the same scam as selling the Brooklyn Bridge -- but you don't have to have a bridge...

our sun is of the correct size to turn into a red giant and will one day expand until the earth is inside the sun - and the earth will end.
Where did you get that nonsense from? Christians KNOW the world will NEVER end.....world without end. Amen.

So, yes, the sea is rising very slowly.
I'd guess that's thermal expansion of the water, due to rising earth temperatures over the last few centuries, due to increased solar activity over the last few centuries, since the mini ice age in the 1400's.
There ain't a heck of a lot we can do about it -- if we threw the entire planet earth into the Sun, I guess it would make for a nasty Sun spot. Well - it would certainly cause some serious global warming.
