Claiming he was losing customers who objected to the politics of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez, Jim Steil has not renewed his contract with Citgo and re-branded his two gas stations along U.S. 1 as Steil Gas. Venezuela owns Citgo, which refines gasoline in the United States. Citgo stations are not owned by the Venezuelan government.

Bill O'Reilly had some guy from Citgo on last week, and he said Citgo *IS* mostly Venezualan! What's the real story on this? We are boycotting the Citgo stations here, though they might be the most convenient. I don't want to give a single penny to that *(&!*@%#*&!@%# Chavez. >:-(
The stations themselves are privately owned. But the gas they sell is pure Chavez Venezuelan crude. It's just like owning a drug store that sells, say, Schick razors and having a Schick sign out as advertisement to customers. The store is yours but the product you are selling comes from Schick.
Citgo is a refiner based in the US that is 100% owned by the Chavez government (and the NYT of all papers exposed them as a bunch of totally gross thugs about a year ago) it sells gas to independent stations who can buy it from anyone they want, and these stations hang out the citgo sign. But now it looks like lots of them are hanging out other signs and getting their gas from other places. They aren't buying from Hugo anymore.
The owners of any private owned gas station are well within their rights to stop selling the gas of any company.
Many find a better price from another company.
I support any private owner who 'listens' to his customers.
After all, if your customers ain't happy, they ain't coming back.
Here in Minnesota, most all the Citgos have changed to something else since Chavez's UN speech. There used to be many, now I see very few.
Thank you! It is extremely misleading for them to say Citgo isn't Venezualan! {scratches Citgo permanently from gas list}
It doesn't say that he isn't going to keep buying gas from them, only that he isn't going to be displaying their sign.
Years ago I patronised Citgo stations heavily, as their prices were comparitively better than other stations. That changed.
Since Chavez's stance has been widely publicised, the Citgos around here have lowered prices in a panic to attract their former customers. Neither my parents nor I are falling for the ploy. I feel for the independent owners, but they may as well find patriotic Western oil producers to hang their hats (and signs) on.
We should sieze the citgo refining capacity in the US and rename it Patriot Oil company.
the citgo boycott is working slowly but surely.

Did you take a look at the comments section? WHo is this Robert Keane idiot?
No, but Venezuelan crude is part of the blend, just like it is at nearly all the other gas stations. Crude from many sources goes into refineries. And Citgo does not have its own distribution network of pipeline across the country, the product is co-mingled in several locations.
CITGO is running TV commercials here in Philly. The commercials tout the company's (read:Chavez') cynincal program of selling heating oil to the poor at way-below market price. There are several inner-city "residents" (can't tell if they're actors) saying how great CITGO is and the US companies should give away their oil too.
I wonder if Venezuelan TV would brodcast a commercial from Exxon doing the same thing there.
