Can you translate flip-flop?
Boston Herald ^ | 3/10/07 | Boston Herald editorial staff

Former Gov. Mitt Romney is now officially a flip-flopper in two languages. This revelation comes courtesy of the New Hampshire Union Leader and Boston Phoenix blogger David Bernstein.

“A week ago, in response to a question during an interview with New Hampshire Union Leader editors and a reporter, Mitt Romney said, ‘English needs to be the language that is spoken in America. We cannot be a bilingual nation like Canada.’ ”

“Five days later, a Romney news release announced that the campaign had ‘launched its first Spanish radio ad,’ ” the Union-Leader points out. The kicker: The ad ends with an announcer proclaiming, “Pagado por Romney para Presidente.”

No mas, por favor!

Run the ad in English and ask people who wish to hear it in different languages to go to Mitt's website and see it there...we need English as the _official_ language!

Duncan Hunter looks like the best candidate so far...

Reagan? Probably not, but he seems to have his head screwed-on-straight.

It's bad enough MA has Ted Kennedy siding with the illegals
and speaking espanol...
("HASTA LA VICTORIA!"--quote from him frequently played on
Howie Carr show). Pretty soon English will be the SECOND
language in the US!

Technically not flip-flopping.

Shameless pandering and faking his true identity, yes, but not really a flip-flop.

Just like wanting to ban assault weapons and touring Shot Show with Wayne LaPierre, just pandering and fakery.

This is petty and not well reasoned.

Saying the children need to be taught in English and directing an ad at ADULTS in Spanish is neither a flip nor a flop. They are not mutually exclusive ideas.

I speak Spanish but since it is not my first language I understand ads in English much better. I am sure the legal Cuban immigrant ADULTS feel the same way about their native and seconds languages.

Well, the editors of the conservative paper in Boston apparently feel it is. It might come up on the campaign trail: if you're for English as the official language why did you run ads in Spanish?"

>>Saying the children need to be taught in English and directing an ad at ADULTS in Spanish is neither a flip nor a flop. They are not mutually exclusive ideas.

Good point, though.

I agree! Plus, the ad was targeted to Cuban Americans who fled communism in search fo Freedom.

The Boston Globe seems to have made destroying Romney it's highest purpose, much like the Washington Post took out another good GOP candidate, George Allen, last year.

You can see the different liberal media outlets clearing the path for their preferred candidate.

For the record, reaching out to people who do NOT speak english is not a "flip-flop" from stating that people SHOULD speak english.

They don't, and they vote, and if you want them to vote for you, you better speak their language.

Flops: Floating position operations per second; a measure of a candidate's memory access performance.

While I recognize that not all citizens speak English, I'm curious what fraction of non-English-speaking voters are citizens. I'd be surprised if it's even 25%.

In digital circuits, the flip-flop, latch, or bistable multivibrator is an electronic circuit which has two stable states and thereby is capable of serving as one bit of memory. A flip-flop is controlled by one or two control signals and/or a gate or clock signal. The output often includes the complement as well as the normal output. As flip-flops are implemented electronically, they naturally also require power and ground connections.

as seen on wikipedia

Sorry, not a flip flop. Not even a D'oh! Not a mistake. The article is tub-thumping, looking for something to rend their garments and act appalled over, or, alternately, do a skit on Saturday Night Live.

I think English should be the official language, but I always tried to have someone bi-lingual assigned to my station, so they could speak with people who did not understand English, or pretended they didn't. I found that shouting at people more loudly did not make them understand English any better. Doubtless, Romney believes that people who listen to spanish language radio and television might enjoy a message in their native language.

In political terms, the lack of proper grounding will cause unexpected and erroneous thoughts. And just plain stupid comments.

This is really foolish knit picking that I wouldn't expect from the Boston Herald. They know better from Romney's record as Governor that he made it his mission to implement the will of the people in MA when they voted to eliminate bilingual education in favor of English immersion (see reference below). It must have been an extraordinarily slow news day at the Herald.

Governor Romney strongly supported a successful ballot initiative that replaced the state's bilingual program with English immersion.
(Romney Vows to Protect English Immersion Law, May 1, 2003)

They courted the Cuban vote in 2000 and 2004, and they will do so in 2008 and 2012 and.....

From 2004:

"These people are not natural Democrat voters," says Perez-Castellon, herself a committed Republican. "That's why I think Bush will win their support."

But the real enemy is apathy. If enough people think neither candidate is tough enough on Cuba, they'll stay home on election day.

Politicians court Cuban swing vote

Good for Romney!
