Former Senate Republican leader Howard Baker said Friday he is urging his friend Fred Thompson, a TV actor and former U.S. senator, to run for president and is encouraging others to draft him.
Among potential complications in a Thompson race is that he is good friends with McCain, a current presidential candidate. Thompson endorsed McCain for president in his 2000 bid.
Baker said his wife, former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker, R-Kan., already supports McCain for president and Baker said he too might back McCain if Thompson does not run.

"Nixon was a crook."
===
I see you are dutyfully spouting the Dem talking points, while having the temerity of using a screen name invoking Reagan and claiming to be a conservative.
I know I sat through those hearing from Det to NYC.
Yikes! I voted for McGoven....
The time when creepy Kerry was in Det. I lived by Wayne state U. so much hate for the Vietnam war/Soldiers etc. it was crazy I moved to NY and became a Republican......
Thanks. I saw that last week.
I don't need to read my history I lived throuh it!
There was a lot of good things about Nixon he also has class he resign to save the country from being torn apart not like the Clintons who were also behind doing Nixon in!
Alright I've had enough. I've got my asbestos underwear on because I'll no doubt get flamed beyond recognition but give me a break. Duncan Hunter is a good man but he's got about as much chance of winning as I do.
One chooses the most conservative person with a realistic chance of winning the nomination and the election. You DH diehards joust with windmills if you must, I'll work for a viable choice and let the Don Quixotes waist their time and efforts chasing ghost turds.
you are totally wrong. look at the FR poll for starters. Fred is the unity candidate in the Republican party. there are no other conservatives in the race who can win and no other Republican candidates except for Rudy who have legitimate national appeal at this time. add the baggage factor and Fred is alone. The most convincing comments I am seeing (besides at FR) can be summarized as "a republican I can vote for vs. a candidate to run against the democrats". that says it all.
No need to start with the divide and conquer business just yet; Thompson hasn't declared. His entanglement with McCain and this Baker endorsement aren't exactly going to endear him to Hunter supporters.
But, the hint of star quality and name recognition do appear very threatening to Giuliani supporters.

Fred Thomspson on the Issues

Hillary on the Issues:
I swear some of you people are insane beyond belief.
No matter who runs there is some clown car of Freepers that is ready to find ANYTHING to push as a reason not to vote of candidate X. Of course the candidate they support is as pure as the sun is bright.
Sweet Christ, I dont give a damn that Thompson supported McCain in 2000! The issue is what he believes and that alone.
I supported Nixon in 68&72. Where were you? Nixon was caught red handed lying about his involvement in the Watergate affair, you crud.
And you are a liberal supporting the liberal Rudy Giuliani in 2008.
You have no conservative credentials whatsoever, mister liberal!
I like Hunter just fine. Tancredo, too. But name the last time a House member got his party's nomination?
We have to be pragmatic here. I think Thompson can beat any of the current 'Rats running. Mitt? No. McCain? Too unpredictable. Rudy? Hell, my governor (Strickland, a 'Rat) is more conservative.
Thompson can do the populist thing while having more smarts than Hitlery and Hussein Obama.
In 1979 the Dems and the media laughed at Reagan, too.
Right now I go with the candidate who has the best chance of beating the Democrats. At the moment, there's no one better than RUDY. Sure, he's far from perfect, but I'll take him to protect me from the Islamofacists more than anyone else, so far.
"But it's going to be tough on Duncan Hunter if Thompson runs."
Thompson/Hunter ticket then. I think Hunter is 52.
What we are looking for is the best electable conservative candidate. I don't think that candidate is Rudy McRomney.
I don't think I'd gag voting for Thompson.
"I'll work for a viable choice "
Very sensible. I agree completely.
That's why I am supporting Rudy -- he is a leader, which is what we need during the war against terrorists AND he can beat Hillary. President Hillary would destoy the country.
Hunter was at CPAC last week, up against Romney & Rudy. He only got a few votes among the MOST conservative group of groups. I was surprised. He has no spunk. He couldn't energize the crowd even though he gave a wonderful speech.
I guess little things like your choice may result in President Hillary is of no concer to you?
Sorry--there are too many photos of Rudy in drag. I wouldn't vote for him in the primaries for any reason. The man would be an indignity to the Oval Office. [Now--would I vote for him if Hillary! were his opponent? I'd have to hold my nose and do it, because Hillary! would be an even worse indignity.]
" dont give a damn that Thompson supported McCain in 2000! The issue is what he believes"
Helloooo! The issues one believes in IS REFLECTED in whom one supports. Anyone who supported McCain against Bush in 2000 demonstrated exactly what they believe in.
Hey, I agree, Rudy has lots of baggage. Yes, he's been in drag, and I'm much more "conseervative" than he. However, my concern, and I believe also, those at CPAC have TERRORISM on the mind.
This is not a normal type election. I don't forget all the positive things Rudy did for NYC. Besides cleaning up the town, he cut welfare in half or more, and required anyone on welfare to work 20 hours a week. He's a bit ruthless in many ways, and perhaps that's what we need at this time. We have serious problems in the world. I'm with you thought, the Dems will keep marching out the photo's of Rudy in drag. Hey, it might bring over a few of the liberal states that we need.
