Former Sen. Baker pushes Fred Thompson for president (Thompson supported McCain)
Scripps News ^ | March 9, 2007 | RICHARD POWELSON

Former Senate Republican leader Howard Baker said Friday he is urging his friend Fred Thompson, a TV actor and former U.S. senator, to run for president and is encouraging others to draft him.

Among potential complications in a Thompson race is that he is good friends with McCain, a current presidential candidate. Thompson endorsed McCain for president in his 2000 bid.

Baker said his wife, former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker, R-Kan., already supports McCain for president and Baker said he too might back McCain if Thompson does not run.

I've seen some pretty strong Rudy people here say they'd jump to Thompson, or at least seriously consider him.

Which isn't surprising given that most of the Rudy people seem to apologize for his beliefs more than defend them, and to promise us he'll act contrary to his principles as if that's a selling point.

In fact, for many of them it seems winning is the only criteria, so of course if Thompson polls better than Hillary and Obama they would have no reason NOT to jump to Thompson -- because he would meet their criteria of a person with an "R" by their name that can beat Hillary.

Nixon used the Presidency to cover up a criminal act. I can't believe anybody posting to FR doesn't know this.

Why not just support Obama? He's got a good chance of beating Hillary, and he's only a little more liberal than Rudy is....

Rudy spent the last two years crossing the country campaigning for Republicans on the issue of terrorism.

And his record of accomplishment in that task? We lost both the house AND the senate.

The problem with considering a Senator is that the Senate is a place where people are expected to be collegial and work together.

He didn't just vote for it, he was a co-sponsor, and McCain said it wouldn't have passed without him.

And he did it not to pay people off, but because he really believed it was the right thing to do.

It's his biggest black mark for me right now. I'd have to hear him explain it, or at least acknowledge the problems with it.

But Rudy supports it as well, and Bush signed it. I disliked McCain because it was clear he was trying to cover up for his own sinful past, and was pandering. I don't think Thompson was pandering -- he was on his way out the door at the time, and wasn't contemplating any further involvement in politics.

Rudy's coattails will be for democrats who espouse the same views he does on a wide range of issues.

If you turn off 5% of the conservatives, and draw in another 10% independents and democrats who like Rudy's leadership and his liberal social positions, they won't likely support conservatives downticket who strongly disagree with Rudy.

Look at the "coattails" Arnold had in California -- none at all.

I think we would need a good strong 3rd-party conservative to get the republican base to the polls, or else we'd get crushed down-ticket by all the extra moderates and liberals Rudy would drag to the polls to vote for him.

What you say is so very true! I can't tell you how many times a Rudy supporter has said, "Rudy had to act that way in NY *but* he won't act like a liberal when he becomes president". Surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre he won't! LOL!

That's just what I believe also, that this is a ploy to split votes on our side.

If anyone needs to stop and think, it's Thompson (who I like very much).

He also used his Presidency to open up relations with the ChiComs which led to an almost unfathomable collapse in a variety of businesses in America.

If it's true that he supports McCain....FORGET IT THOMPSON.
...and I actually liked the idea of him running before I heard that.

Fred Thompson has NOT come out in support of anyone during the present campaign! In the 2000 campaign he initially supported Lamar Alexander (a fellow Tenneseean). When Alexander's campaign folded, he switched his support to McCain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Dalton_Thompson#Senate_career

Don't let the dust throwers here discourage you from finding out about Thompson for yourself. They have an agenda.

How soon people forget 9-11 and understand the dangers in our world... how fragile we are against the enemy. Rudy's a man of RESULTS. I can overlook a lot at this stage in our country. Thanks
