The first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey gauging general-election support for Republican Senator Sam Brownback shows him trailing Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton among likely voters by the narrow margin of just five percentage points. Its Clinton 46% Brownback 41%.
However, Democratic Senator Barack Obama leads Senator Brownback by the much wider margin of 49% to 34%.
Advertisment Clinton and Obama lead the polls for Democrats seeking their partys 2008 Presidential nomination. While Clinton has been ahead in every Rasmussen Reports poll for the Democratic nomination, Obama and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards generally do better in general election match-ups (see summary of all match-ups).
Brownback, who announced his presidential candidacy on January 20 as a staunch religious conservative, is in the second tier of GOP Presidential hopefuls.
Both Clinton and Obama have high name recognition, but Clinton is saddled with higher unfavorables. Forty-eight percent (48%) view her unfavorably, 34% "very unfavorably." Throughout 2005 and 2006, our Hillary Meter indicated that a plurality of likely voters would not vote for the former First Lady no matter who she might run against.
Obama is viewed unfavorably by 37%. Only 14% dislike him strongly.
Brownback is an unknown to 43%, and viewed favorably by only 19%. Just a couple weeks after his announcement, the percentage who view him favorably isn't any larger even among Republicans.
That may change as Senator Brownback becomes better known. But the enthusiasm especially for Giuliani among Republicans persists despite the mayor's willingness to openly acknowledge disagreements with social conservatives on abortion and other hot-button issues.

Rasmussen Reports is an electronic publishing firm specializing in the collection, publication, and distribution of public opinion polling information.
The Rasmussen Reports ElectionEdge Premium Service for Election 2008 offers the most comprehensive public opinion coverage ever provided for a Presidential election.
Rasmussen Reports Election 2006 coverage has been praised for its accuracy and reliability. Michael Barone, Senior Writer for U.S. News & World Report and co-author of The Almanac of American Politics, mentions, One clear lesson from the Republican victory of 2004 and the Democratic victory of 2006 is that the best place to look for polls that are spot on is RasmussenReports.com." And University of Virginia Professor Larry Sabato states, In election campaigns, Ive learned to look for the Rasmussen results. In my experience, they are right on the money. There is no question Rasmussen produces some of the most accurate and reliable polls in the country today.
Rasmussen Reports was also the nation's most accurate polling firm during the 2004 Presidential election and the only one to project both Bush and Kerry's vote total within half a percentage point of the actual outcome.
During both Election 2004 and Election 2006, RasmussenReports.com was the top-ranked public opinion research site on the web. We had twice as many visitors as our nearest competitor and nearly as many as all competitors combined.
Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, has been an independent pollster for more than a decade.
Shhhh. That's the sound of the "We need Rudy because he's the only one who can beat Hillary" balloon leaking badly.
I wonder if I could poll 40% against Hillary?
Why do you think the media is trying to cram McInsane and Jullie-Annie down the Republicans' throat? Those are the two candidates that could split the conservative voters from the party and give the hildabeast a chance...
Never forget that GWB got a higher percentage of votes from Berkly, CA than the Washington press corp...
Brownback is a bigger stupid ass than Hagel. We are willing guests of the Iraqi government. We don't tell other countries and civilisations what to do. All the U.S. wants is normal country-to-country relations. That's all.
I think Satan could poll at 40% against the hildebeast...
Satan and Mrs clinton would split the vote!

I think you're right. It makes no sense.
Now if he were to get half (or even a quarter) of the media coverage she gets in the media, he'd do much better.
Right now the MSM is trying to sell Guiliani, Romney and McPain. Why? Because they're not conservatives. IMO of course.
??? Who the "h" is Brownback? Never heard of him.
They are retarded - and they probably will nominate her.
Is that because you don't keep up? Are you serious? He is a former doctor and now a senator.
Except that I have more hope for Romney than the other two. He is saying the right things. Remember that Reagan was not always Reagan.
I am very disappointed that Brownback did not back the troop surge - which is why I will not support him or Chuck Hagel/Schmegel.
He's not only pro-abortion but, from what I've read, he would go as far as wanting to use tax dollars to pay for abortions. He even mandated marriage licenses to homosexual couples even after his supposed pro-marriage conversion.
Is Romney's conversion for real, or is he simply saying anything to get elected?
See: Folger urges conservatives not to settle for GOP frontrunners.
It makes a good case for not settling for The Three RINOs.
However, remember that Ronald Reagan and W.'s father were not always pro life. Whether they switched as a matter of convenience is not of much concern to me - what is, IS WHAT THEY WOULD ACTUALLY DO. I used to be pro choice and switched sides after I read about partial birth abortion. That was the breaking point for me and I became completely pro life. More people go from pro choice to pro life than the other way around.
I agree. This poll has to be some kind of anomaly.
It would further the factionalism that is roiling Iraq. Interestingly, Iraq histotically has never been divided according to sects. The Turks did divide it three ways, but with borders that went horizonally based on the North, the central and the South, and were generally based on the major cities in those regions: Mosul, Baghdad and Basra.
Are there really people who have never heard of him?
If nothing else this demonstrates that the Hillary thing can be beaten by a conservative candidate. Everybody's heard of Clintoon, but Brownback (who "nobody ever heard of") still did very well. IMO, of course!
