I know what you mean. I even read a book by a Biblical scholar with his interpretation of the Book of Revelation and was just as confused after reading that as I was before.
Anything by Tom Wolfe.

You can only read such Biblical books by the Power of the Holy Ghost, elsewise you are on the outside looking in!
A very helpful commentary on the Book of Revelation is one written by Ben Witherington a few years ago. I teach this stuff, and it is very readable and pitched for the general audience.
Maybe this will help: Things are going to get worse (as you can see that they actually are), then, the Lord is going to return and take care of the situation.
Christ's Revelation to John is understandable through faith in Christ.
Without faith in Him, the understanding isn't made available by God the Holy Spirit. Without the ministry of God the Holy Spirit, the book isn't as easily understood because it communicates many spiritual things beyond the perception of the senses or the mind. Faith is a system of perception which is preceded by acceptance of God. He does all the work in His grace.
