WASHINGTON The so-called "Beltway Madam" pleaded not guilty to federal racketeering and money laundering charges in federal court Friday.
Prosecutors say Deborah Jean Palfrey, 50, ran a call-girl service in the Washington, D.C. area for 13 years, taking appointments from her California home and dispatching women to luxury hotels in Washington and Baltimore. They say the service promoted prostitution.
Palfrey was released Friday on her own recognizance, but had her passport confiscated. She was officially booked, and had her picture and fingerprints taken by police.
The judge also ordered Palfrey to wear an electronic monitoring device to track her travels between California and Washington, and anywhere in between.
Palfrey, who was indicted last week, is threatening to release her little black book of 10,000 clients on the Internet to pay for her defense.
She writes on her Web site that "consideration is being given to selling the entire 46 pounds of detailed and itemized phone records for the 13-year period, to raise the requisite defense funds."

She doesn't have names, she has records of phone calls (phone numbers, dates, and times). This information readily leads to lots of other information.
You are voting to clean up behavior which has no effect on you. You are voting for big government programs and more taxes. How is it you think that's conservative?
I don't vote with you.
That's correct because you vote nanny state.
"Oh, this would be just sweet. Get out the popcorn and turn on TiVo."
If she lives long enough to rat out her clients.
Whatever makes you feel better.
So would some foreign intelligence services and al Qaeda I'll bet....
Please, Madame, put the names on the internet. Your nation needs you. Answer the call.
That is her angle, no doubt. She had over $750,000 (according to the indictment) deposited in her accounts.
She doesn't need someone to pay her legal fees, she needs someone to apply pressure.
What? Are you serious? The worst guy in the world was Haggard and was he a democrat?????
Well the way they smear us who cares. we are just as fair as CBS here.
