WASHINGTON The so-called "Beltway Madam" pleaded not guilty to federal racketeering and money laundering charges in federal court Friday.
Prosecutors say Deborah Jean Palfrey, 50, ran a call-girl service in the Washington, D.C. area for 13 years, taking appointments from her California home and dispatching women to luxury hotels in Washington and Baltimore. They say the service promoted prostitution.
Palfrey was released Friday on her own recognizance, but had her passport confiscated. She was officially booked, and had her picture and fingerprints taken by police.
The judge also ordered Palfrey to wear an electronic monitoring device to track her travels between California and Washington, and anywhere in between.
Palfrey, who was indicted last week, is threatening to release her little black book of 10,000 clients on the Internet to pay for her defense.
She writes on her Web site that "consideration is being given to selling the entire 46 pounds of detailed and itemized phone records for the 13-year period, to raise the requisite defense funds."

And where is Ann when we need her!!! LMFAO!!!
Sibley said the list includes some well-known politicians.
"It's a statistical certainty that there are a fair amount of high-profile people who use the service, all across the government and private sector, here in the metropolitan D.C. area," said Sibley.
Not only is Palfrey threatening to expose, embarrass and possibly subpoena clients, but she's taking a combative tone with prosecutors. On her Web site, she admits e-mailing them and promising to make the legal situation "long and unpleasant."

Oh, this would be just sweet. Get out the popcorn and turn on TiVo.
Racketeering? This is such an overcharge. For crying out loud, she was running a call girl operation, not the mob.

Well, ya just never know about who is working with who these days...:-)
I wonder how many of his columns have eminated from Madame's musty shoe closet during a panty hat timeout?

Good catch! Yes, the ole toe sucker himself could be a regular client....wow, it would be fun to see her little book.
The other night I heard a radio talk show host talking about this. He must have seen the "escort service" website and he was saying this was a "legal" business. I thought, oh you are sooooooo naive, not to know what that is code for. But, maybe he did know but wanted his wife hear him say he didn't!
Call girl operations do get intertwined with the human trafficking industry. Human trafficking is intertwined with organized crime.
I've no idea if this woman's operation was involved; but it is not out of the question to think it.

...chances are good that some interesting names will pop up. Statistically, if you have 10,000 people, and given the structure of this particular service, these werent people beckoning from car windows, he said. The escorts only responded to four and five star hotels or private residences. And so the landlines will show up on the private residences real quickly.

This list has got to come out sooner or later. Where are those guys who constantly leak national security info to the NYT when we need them?
Effect of outlawing something. It will be controlled by criminals and driven underground and the bad guys will get rich. Economics 101.
That little black book weighs forty-six pounds...I don't think it will fit in your pocket.
Sell the book!
Not if the clean up crew comes in :)
SELL IT!!!!! SELL !!!! SELL !!! SELL !!!
What a hoot it would be to have the cable newsies' spend a week or two tearing through that stuff.
In our city a cop was just killed by a wannbe gangster and we have tagging and gang grafitti everywhere. Plus we have a number of other crimes which are far more serious than someone selling sex. I want the cops on that and not busting some marine or business man for paying for sex or the woman who sells it.
I don't want our legislature passing laws which make gangsters and other bad guys rich because someone is offended by selling sex or thinks they can stop someone from getting high. Also, I don't want to pay taxes to put them in jail or prison at $25,000 per per year.
