Is America ready to elect a black president?
The Collins report ^ | March 8, 2007 | Steve Filmore

With the increasing fanfare over Barack Obama’s candidacy for president, we’ve heard much of what an exciting and articulate candidate he is. But we’ve heard precious few seasoned discussions regarding America’s willingness to elect a black president.

Superficially, this seems like a foregone conclusion. And, after all, since the 1940s, polls have been saying that a majority of Americans would be willing to vote for a black president. But, when it gets right down to it, will Americans really .....?

The truth is that the answer to this question is not a simple yes or no. It appears that many Americans do have a problem with race and sometimes in the most unlikely of places. In this past election cycle, there were at least 5 high-profile US Senate and gubernatorial contests featuring an African-American Democrat or Republican: Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio, Lynn Swan in Pennsylvania, Harold Ford in Tennessee, Michael Steele in Maryland and Deval Patrick in Massachusetts. While all of these candidates were initially believed to have an excellent chance of winning, only one emerged victorious on Election Day.

Contrary to what some people seem to think, racism is not the only reason for the American voter’s malaise over electing a non-white candidate. In 2004, I tried to convince a Republican friend of mine to choose a Hispanic candidate in her state’s GOP Senate primary, but she told me she was hesitant because she thought that a non-white would try to impose a racial agenda if elected. People also feel pressure to vote for their own kind. Census statistics show that 2 of 3 Americans are non-Hispanic white, compared to only 13% of Americans who are black. When the actual eligible electorate is factored in, whites constitute a whopping 80% of the voters and blacks a mere 10%.

Personally I'm disappointed that Thomas Sowell is too old (and too smart) to take the job.

I personally think he's very likely the smartest man in America.

The left is stuck on the idea that America is a racist country and that Americans are racists who won't vote for Obama because he is black.

Race baiting is a highly profitable industry, lining the pockets of many liberals, giving them control over masses of people and leverage over Wall Street and Congress. Those profiting from the race baiting industry aren't about to give up the gravy train any time soon.

I have no doubt if someone like Michael Steele or Ken Blackwell were nominated, they would win. But if a far lefty like Obama runs and loses they will blame "racism."

Maybe -- but not an apostate Muslim who has already introduced Shari'a law into the State of Illinois via the Halal Food Act.

Obama sponsored Illinois Senate Bill 750 creating the "Halal Food Act," providing for inspections by the Department of Agriculture to ensure that all food labeled Halal is prepared according to Islamic law.

Imagine what he could do from the Oval Office.

Sure.... if we can get Alan Keyes to drop his position on "reparations".... he'd do ok.

The Democrats have a hard time fielding an attractive white candidate. Their Black "leaders" are so annoying none would ever get near the White House.

Let them nominate Barack Hussein and then let the fun begin.

Is he, or isn't he?

If Ohio is any example, they overwhelmingly rejected an extremely qualified, educated, credentialed black conservative.

I wouldn't bet money on Obama. It might be Hillary/Obama, but I doubt it will be the other way around.

Not so fast. The Clintons have done well getting rid of their obstacles. VP Hillary wouldn't last very long, and you know what I'm talkin' about! ;)

I would not vote for a "Black President"...

I most certainly would vote for a President that is Black!

I hope America wakes up and sees that Barack Hussein has chosen his path as the former.

You know, it's funny, but when a Michael Steele or a Ken Blackwell runs, or if we're talking about a Condi Rice, the MSM NEVER raises the race issue, as in, "Are we too racist to vote for ______." The MSM only hints at our universal racism when a Black liberal is seeking some office.

Who can forget the ugly, racist cartoon of Condi Rice in the MSM?

People also feel pressure to vote for their own kind.

My "own kind" is a person with their head screwed on, not a person who has to have the same skin tone.

The underlying thrust of the article is that unless Americans are willing to elect *any* black as president, they are still racist.

That's a good try and will work on most people, but not on me.

I agree. What's weird is that there are actually people who plan on voting for him only because he's black, because he "deserves a break" or whatever. If he's good, he'll be good. But it's so weird for people to vote for or against him just because of his color.
Same with Hilary, people think that because there was never a woman president before, they should vote for her because women deserve a chance, when she would make a horrible president. (If they want a woman so bad, why not elect Rice?)
