CBS Producer Goes Around, Comes Around (Couric not consulted)
The New York Times (via Drudge) ^ | March 9, 2007 | Bill Carter

Posted on 03/09/2007 3:25:35 AM PST by Zakeet

Rick Kaplan described his new position as the executive producer of the “CBS Evening News” yesterday as “coming home.” He worked on the broadcast in the 1970s when Walter Cronkite was the anchor. But then, he could have said the same thing at almost any television news organization this week.

Mr. Kaplan, who is 59, is among the most experienced, and most traveled, producers in TV news, having worked for ABC News, CNN and MSNBC as well as CBS over a 35-year career. He has won more than 30 Emmy Awards and has worked with some of the biggest names in the business, like Peter Jennings, Ted Koppel and Diane Sawyer.

But the situation Mr. Kaplan is entering, with the network evening news competition at a fever pitch, and with CBS still trying to mount a comeback behind its high-profile new anchor, Katie Couric, is also an opportunity for Mr. Kaplan to stage a comeback of his own.

He has bounced around the news business over the last decade, which includes a short stint running MSNBC and a somewhat turbulent tenure as president of CNN when the network was caught in a scandal over a report about the use of nerve gas in Vietnam.

Bill Lord, who worked for many years at ABC News with Mr. Kaplan, including on that network’s newscast, and who now teaches journalism at Boston University, said there was only so much Mr. Kaplan can do.

“An executive producer can make marginal improvements in the ratings,” Mr. Lord said, “but with these newscasts it’s about the anchor, the anchor, the anchor.”

According to both men, Ms. Couric was not brought into the conversations until Wednesday, after Mr. Kaplan had accepted the job. Ms. Couric would not comment on Mr. Kaplan’s arrival.

The main thing here is that Katy Couric ddoesn't seem comfortable in her new role. She doesn't seem to be having fun anchoring the broadcast . . not like it was during the Today Show days.

What can a producer do to change that?

Maybe it would be best to put her back on the morning show.

Kaplan just might be the man Hillary needs in charge of the CLINTON BROADCASTING SYSTEM.

For those who might have lost track of this portion of the sleaze associated with the Clinton's, here is a link to remind us all:

More time to have additional face surgery would get her gone for a while.

Couric not consulted ... and if they did consult her, what would the question be, "Him or you, Kate, what's your choice?"

I watched some of CBS news last night. (No cable and I was really bored.) There is too much soft news on the network and not enough factual information. Katy Couric looks as if she's floundering in Dan Rather's and Walter Cronkite's seat.

The main thing is she's no damn good as a news anchor. She's arrogant, off putting, biased in favor of liberal ideology and painfully misportioned in physical structure.

Yes, her voice is "dippy", very unserious. Good for reciting recipes or Hollywood claptrap but not a good fit for national news.

You owe me a new keyboard big time.

First, I laughed so hard I spewed soda.

Then, I started thinking about Perkie's perkies and barfed.

Well done with a great find.
