Mayan leaders announced that priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after US President George W. Bush visits next week.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a national association of indigenous people and peasant farmers, said Thursday.
Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites - which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles - would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.

Rolling a few heads down the stairs ought to really do the trick.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States..."
Huh? This guy is obviously not paying attention regarding his "brothers" getting into the U.S. - President Bush has done very little. The guy should be honoring him!
Yes, not sure how to come up with an exact definition that doesn't leave some groups out, and incorrectly include some groups. But, I think the gist of what I mean is clear.
[Sarcasm]How dare criticize an indigenous, non-western people (indigenous to the Western Hemisphere, but never mind!) whose culture and religious beliefs are beyond critique by western style science and rationalism! Why, you're probably not even sorry we defeated Japan in World War II!
What would Voltaire, the Jacobins, and Karl Marx think of some white guy defiling the sacred mother soil of a people who can communicate with spirits???
Now you stick to bashing rednecks! Those are the only religious people who aren't supposed to believe in anything beyond the physical realm.
I think the Spanish are now considered honorary non-Europeans. I know the Spanish language is now considered "indigenous"--certainly not implicated in the oppression of a native people!
Wow. Now that's a non-sequitur if I ever read one. Creative interpreting going on there. Good job!
Have you been paying so little attention that you think that this is his first trip to South America? Your entire premise is silly.
And, btw, he's never done anything with the motivation of helping 'his legacy.' That was the last guy........you know, the bad one?
This President does what he thinks is right and necssary, regardless of protests by Mayans, or internet malcontents who can't connect one thought to the next.
Too funny considering that the Mayans and other tribes of "indigenous people" are considered lower than whale s*** by the whiter Mexicans and Central Americans.
That's so true because, as most of us here know, nations do not have friends, only interests. I can be friends with people from any country on earth including Iran, North Korea, and Syria, but I despise them as nations.
I have to interject here that I thought Apocalypto was a great, great movie.
He is asking them what more he can give them.
My friend's parents were hippy dippy types and they happened to be standing on top of a Mayan temple shortly after they found out she was preglant with their first child. Guess what they named her. My friend is over 30 now with two kids of her own, by the way.
Or does one just need to temporarily throw out that belief system to be effective?
This is a serious and respectful question to both of you.
I give..... ;)
Almost as silly as the trip. IMHO, of course.
And, btw, he's never done anything with the motivation of helping 'his legacy.' /i>
Sure he hasn't.

I have no doubt of that. I just can't imagine what he expects to accomplish.
That's why your screenname is so appropos to your thought process.
btw, don't you have more important things to gripe about?
I wouldn't doubt for a minute that you are perfectly correct in that assumption.
Hey now... Coca is an indigenous crop in central and south america. Who are we to say they shouldn't be using it.
I don't see where your question follows from my post. The President's job is to represent our national interests, not make 'friends'. I suppose my point was that other countries seem to have this concept down pat, but here it is muddy.
To answer your question, I think the president should act in the best interests of the United States of America based on his core values and beliefs. If the exigencies of state cause him to do otherwise, he will be called upon to explain that to the voters, to history, and to God.
Maya, of course.
