The business is free to refuse to accept the payment....and I hope they do.

A nice gesture on his part and I fully understand his frustration, but it won't mean jack to Ameren or any other utility company, nor will it change anything.

But Hancock Kramer said that if he can cause Ameren Todd Gack a little inconvenience, it's worth it to him.

Companies like that routinely have a policy of not accepting cash payments sent by the mail. It will cost them $50 to return it to him, though!

Let me get this right, this guy is going through all the trouble of getting all those pennies, packaging and sending all those those pennies to express his ourage about his bill of $526.62 and now his bill will be $576.62?
Yeah, that'll teach 'em.

The value of copper has sky-rocketed. Witness the theft of electrical cables.
He might make a profit if he melted them down...

If you don't like you high electric bills, try doing something constructive about it. Try insulation, new windows, upgrade old equipment, etc.
Stop whining.

There is something phony baloney about this story.
According to Wikipedia, one penny weighs 2.35 grams
2.35 grams * 52 662 = 123.7557 kilograms
That is 272.8 pounds of pennies! Postal rates must be lower than I thought if he can mail 270+ pounds for just $50. I even tried the online postage calculator on the USPS website. When I entered 273 pounds, I got an error message that it exceeds the 70 pound limit.

The pennies are money. If the company refuses his payment he does not owe anything any more. Enforcing that will be difficult. It's only government agencies that have the unmitigated arrogance to dictate how a person can pay his/her taxes.
To: Abathar
Better to spend some of that extra money on carbon offsets. I just happen to have some for sale.

It's not the utility's fault that prices have gone up so much. He would be better off sending bags of cow dung to the Sierra Club, Greenpeace and NRDC.

Did he use 200% more energy? His rate went up 200%??? Who else got a 200% increase? There must be more than one ticked off person.
