A Louisiana National Guardsman shot and killed a New Orleans man who pointed what was thought to be a rifle at a group of police and other guardsmen early Thursday morning.
According to Sgt. Joe Narcisse, an NOPD spokesman, the incident happened shortly before 1 a.m. in the 2100 block of Benton Street. The guardsmen were patrolling the area of Benton and North Miro streets when they saw a man riding a bicycle holding a hacksaw and behaving suspiciously.
Guardsmen got out of their vehicles and pursued the man, Narcisse said. The man pulled out a knife and then threw a piece of broken glass as them, cutting a sergeants arm. The man ran into a nearby home as the guardsmen called New Orleans Police for assistance.
Police officers arrived on the scene and accompanied the guardsmen in the house. As they approached the man, he pulled out a BB gun that looked like a rifle and pointed it at them, Narcisse said. One of the guardsmen drew his weapon and shot the man several times in the chest. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Narcisse said the man had no identification on him.
Two things.
1 - We should redeploy out of New Orleans immediately.
2 - You'll poke your eye out ralphie!
It doesn't matter what type of gun he had, it was the act of pointing it that got himself shot. Nice shooting, soldier!
"Just like a stupid crook. Brings a BB gun to a gun fight!"
That's it. I couldn't get into the site you posted but I can probably google it . Thanks
I think we have a Darwin Award winner.
Definitely in the top ten.
Barf alert on the NYT link and likely the type of bleeding heart (npi) reporting many have predicted in posts above.
Just a public servant doing his small part to make the world a better place.
Way to go National Guard. More please.
"Oh well, that s*** happens. New Orleans is now a slightly better place than before."
Heh. Well put.
Giving the glowing reputation of the new Orleans police, a lot of people sure are jumping to conclusion's.
Book'em Dano, Murder One.
Geez, didn't the guy with the BB gun realize that he could've shot his eye out?
A very important part of law enforcement training is the 21ft rule. Anybody inside of 21 ft is considered an immediate threat. They can get to you with a knife, club, rock or just about anything else they intend to use before you can draw your weapon and fire. I've seen this challenged over and over by young rookies in training, I've yet to see one get his weapon out and fire before the individual makes contact.
Did the BB gun owner go through a background check and waiting period to purchase that BB gun? Oh wait, it was probably not registered. Assault type BB gun ban? Need more laws. @sarc/
[sarcasm]I call BS.
Every body knows that the 5.56mm M-16 round is only good for varmints and isn't capable of killing a human.
I demand a retraction !!!
[/sarcasm]
Even in a limited mentality zone like New Orleans, pointing a weapon of any kind at the military is likely to get you shot.
Tough Sh*t........call your governor.
Before Katrina, I wouldn't have turned off of Orleans Avenue onto N. Miro (towards the lower 9th Ward), not even in response to a triple-dog-dare. There was a tremendous amount of crack cocaine-related activity in that area. Even the cops steered clear, except to go recover the bodies.
The hacksaw is an interesting clue to suspicious behavior. Betcha this numbskull was stealing copper plumbing to sell for scrap, or some such stupidity. I understand that the ground floor of the old Dixie Brewery on Tulane Ave. was stripped of its copper tubing and bottling equipment. Fortunately, the cypress brewing vats were on the second floor, untouched by the flood.
Damn, now Obama's gonna git it.
They don't really even need a weapon since the officer has one and they can close the distance before the officer can use it.
If I were personally threatened, my first question for myself is can I and anyone I would want to protect flee safely, or is it at least the safest option. If so, I'm not going to waste time trying to draw my gun, I'm going to run.
If fleeing isn't a viable option, I'd draw my gun and take aim.
After I've drawn my gun in response to the threat and I'm prepared to fire is when I have the luxury to give the bad guy a chance to surrender or flee before I use deadly force to remove the threat.
If the bad guy is farther out than 21 feet I can bring my gun to ready, but not aim it at him, but I can't allow him to get closer without being prepared to immediately pull the trigger.
However, there's no guarantee that even the eleven .45 cal speer gold dots in my gun are going to stop a determined aggressor from closing the distance and stabbing me.
This conversation reminds me that it's been a couple months since I've been to the range. I need to go practice this weekend.
