What's Happening to Conservative Websites?
vanity | 3-7-07 | Bob J

Posted on 03/07/2007 6:57:43 PM PST by Bob J

I have diligently watched the rise in size and influence of conservative websites, including Free Republic, over the last 7-8 years. I have been shocked and concerned over the drop in traffic at the most popular ones over the last year or so. There was good growth up until 2006 but since then there has been a steady downtrend that would crash any other market.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is happening? I'm out of explanations. The deficiencies in alexa.com are noted, but even if the numbers aren't accurate you're still comparing off numbers to off numbers so the decline is consistent.

When I first signed on, Free Republic was a place where both conservatives and libertarians could discuss political issues freely and mostly politely. As time went on, social conservatives gained more and more power within FR and other views were discouraged. Now more heat than light is generated. You can see this in the Giulaini/Hunter threads.

If you and your side succeeds in pushing out all the socially 'live and let live'

-----------------------------------------

Ignoring the cost of uncontrolled illegal immigration to Americans in the areas of crime, healthcare (dozens of closed hospitals) and education (tax dollars earmarked for school programs re-routed to esl and other illegal-focused spending) is 'live and let live'?

How can one be 'hopelessly liberal' on social issues (gun control, abortion, family integrity, open borders, personal responsibility are social issues) and still be a Conservative?

Wanting lower taxes does not make one a conservative...especially when one is a small business owner who would personally benefit.

Sorry but the one whom you choose to defend profits from illegal immigrants and when asked about the negative effects on our society caused by these people, specifically the cost to the victims of violent crime perpetrated by them, responded - and this is a quote - "YAWN"......iow, screw them, I'm making mine.

Share your bed with whom you will.

They represent the traffic of websites that are noted at the top of the graph.

Ok. Maybe I missed this part, but (and more germane to the thread), What do you mean by "socials"? Exactly which issues? Part of the problem is in defining "Conservatism", which, as an idealogy, can embrace the strict interpretation of the Constitution as the founders wrote and practiced it, (which would rapidly do away with a number of Cabinet positions), etc.

I think part of the difficulty we are all having around here stems from what who considers a conservative stance.

At best, let's try to define the end-member in the spectrum.

First, those powers not delegated to the Federal Government would revert to the States and to the people. (sound familliar?--it should)

That would eliminate the Department of Education, HHS, and a host of Federal Agencies, just for starters.

This alone would make for smaller government at the Federal level, and a smaller tax bill, so the income tax could be eliminated, as there is no provision for such in the original Constitution (I include the Bill of Rights with the original Constitution because ratification would still be pending without it).

Similarly, by strict interpretation, at a minimum, a citizen who had no disqualifying mental conditions or felony record could own and bear any arm they were capable of carrying. This would do away with most gun control laws, in accordance with the clause shall not be infringed.

The right to life is one of the unalienable rights, listed (...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness), and should be sacrosanct. After that, if the mother wants to give the baby up for adoption, that is up to her, and there are people who would be glad to raise the kid. (If the courts got out of the way, maybe the adoptive parents could foot part or all of the medical bills for the mother or some other arrangement.)

The clause "...to provide for the common defense... would necessitate a capable military.

That should get the ball rolling, for starters, maybe you can think of a few. Feel free to add some in, or to even dispute these, but remember, we are looking for the 100% conservative position, the benchmark by which other positions could be measured.

This could get interesting, but anyone should feel free to join in.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is happening? I'm out of explanations.

The message of the "right wing," as is found on the popular sites referenced in the article, tend to be unidimensional.

Regardless of the actual cause or the actual culprit, the blame is directed at democrats, liberals, gays, moonbats, etc.

As seen in the past election, in many areas, Americans who are NOT core members of one of the 2 major parties, are not buying it anymore.

The republican "conservative" approach has had it's chance and has failed to maintain enough popular support to endure. The reasons are many, and too obvious to state, but the migration away from the right continues.

If the socials now insist that their social beliefs be a part of the deal . . .

Who is insisting this?

I don't believe ya'll can win a referrendum on abortion. But that's just my guess, of course.

It would really depend on how the question is phrased. It's a pretty safe bet thought that if you get rid of Roe, our laws will become much stricter.

You are an extremist, one-trick pony wacko who could be a poster boy for the "new" Klu Klux Klan which some are claiming is rising again.

--------------------------------------------

A KKK poster boy? You really are getting desperate nancy.

I have challenged you three times now to produce any post of mine that comes anywhere near fitting that description. You can't and you know it. But that doesn't stop you from continuing to employ rule number two from the marxist handbook.

I on the other hand use nothing but your own words in describing you.....

What was it you wrote in reply to a post about the numbers of Americans killed or raped by your illegal pals, the numbers of emergency rooms no longer available to Americans and the American students who have to receive diminished services because of them? As I recall you wrote "YAWN". Explain please how your pronounced disdain for the current suffering of Americans because of your illegal pals is in any way conservative.

I believe most are also down at least some. The point is people seem to be going elsewhere or checking out. Years ago everyone agreed the internet and FoxNews would change the world for us.

Now we're looking at a possible Clinton2 in the White House and our frontrunners are Guili and McCain.

What happened?

One thing happening here is if you are not Anti-Rudy, you are branded everything but conservative.
