What's Happening to Conservative Websites?
vanity | 3-7-07 | Bob J

Posted on 03/07/2007 6:57:43 PM PST by Bob J

I have diligently watched the rise in size and influence of conservative websites, including Free Republic, over the last 7-8 years. I have been shocked and concerned over the drop in traffic at the most popular ones over the last year or so. There was good growth up until 2006 but since then there has been a steady downtrend that would crash any other market.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is happening? I'm out of explanations. The deficiencies in alexa.com are noted, but even if the numbers aren't accurate you're still comparing off numbers to off numbers so the decline is consistent.

What is the site that you got the chart/graph from? What do the different colors stand for?

Posts like the following drive people away:

"I'm sure the bitchy Giuliani hags ragging on real conservatives who don't support pro-abortion, anti-gun candidates have something to do with it."

Soon there may be a purge of all pro-Guiliani members, and the decline will go on.

We need a strong conservative for President, no more compassionate conservative types.

Amen to that!

We elected one leader, its ashame we can't follow his lead.

He doesn't know how to lead.

Remember how after his SOTU address in 2005 he said that after his re-election, he would start spending his political capital? He blew it all on a half-baked Social Security reform plan and his continued capitulation to the Mexican government on border security and immigration. What finally jolted me out of giving him the benefit of the doubt was his selection of Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court, and the way the administration went after bonafide conservatives ("snobs," "elitists") when we objected to him handing over the most coveted seat in the Judiciary branch to a personal counsel that had never held a gavel in her life.

And as I have written before, I don't believe he lied about WMDs, but he sure did lie to us about Rumsfeld.

...it's all about get Republicans in control at all costs, not conservatives.

I have heard a lot of that crap, too.

What I am seeing, which may or not be correct, is that when I got here, it was because FR is a Conservative site that I stayed around. Still here, still conservative.

There has been a raft of Republicans in and out who think being a Republican equals being a conservative. At least that is the only reason I can see the promoting (sometimes shrilly and viciously) liberals with the 'R' after their name.

Some of them apparently do not consider us good Republicans.

Well, I'm not a good Republican, I am a Conservative who votes on principle, not party line. Show me a candidate who is anti-abortion, pro-gun, pro controlled borders, anti-illegal immigration, anti-gay marriage, pro smaller government, pro war on terror, pro national security, pro smaller taxes, and has the track record to prove it, and they have my vote--and I really don't care what party they are from.

I think though, that there is a significant component who have been here who have the place confused with a GOP website. That isn't what it says on the home page. Some have left, some are still here fighting for liberal republicanism, and I imagine a few have gotten the zot. Unfortunately, some longstanding FReepers have gone, too, either in a wrangle with the mods over getting too emphatic or out of disgust with the row over the obvious.

Yep, there is a fair amount of contention out there, and it is wearying. I find myself stunned by some of the attacks on staunch conservatives and the adamant, pep-rally style backing of candidates who are far short of the mark by people who deem themselves and their candidates to be conservatives because they are registered Republican. Yep, there is that old confusion again.

There is more, but that is the most noticeable part.

That's where the problem lies for many folks on FR....it's not about advancing conservatism...it's about putting people in office with a "R" after their names....and if you grumble about that then you want Hillary or Obama in the Whitehouse...I will NOT vote for Rudy or any other liberal(yes, that what he is by any defintion) but once again, if he is the candidate against H or O, i will unenthusiatically go to the polling place and vote for the ONCE AGAIN lesser of two evils...but right now, it's before the primary and i am looking for a conservative...period, end of story.

I will NOT let the media pick my candidate.

"If a new visitor to FR started out by reading one of those Coulter threads, why on earth would he or she bother to come back to FR?"

Because self-zotting (opus not included) is FR's best hidden feature. Look into it.

Sept 2001 to March 2007 = five and a half years of

* the adults being in charge in the Executive Branch = peace
* no more terrorist attacks on USA North America = laxity among the people (out of sight, out of mind)
* no scandals
* no dragons in sight to slay

IOW, perhaps people are getting on with their lives until the next campaign season.

I think you are right about that. Supposedly FR is a conservative site. Almost daily if you express conservative opinion, you are bullied, insulted and savaged by people who call themselves conservatives. I think maybe many people are tired of the attacks and don't feel at home anymore. The conservative message has been hijacked. The most irritating response to one of my posts was that what I thought was just too bad. I'll vote for whoever the party puts up because I have no where else to go. If I have to hold my nose again , what difference does it make which dots I fill in at election time?

In the last days of the Roman Empire, the conservatives quit visiting conservative websites. Visigoth posters had infiltrated the major conservative websites and changed the nature of the website completely. The ruler, Obamas Hillerius, made sweeping liberal changes that doomed the empire.

The liberals and our islamic enemies had a lot of help from many of our own so called elite talk show hosts.

Democrat guests were treated to french kisses while repubicans were excoriated for not being everything the host demanded from them.

The steady drumbeat of bashing the President and the republicans in office by our side helped get us here.

No doubt the 'I told you so' crowd is quite proud of themselves right about now.

The socials are even threating openly to end the coalition. If someone pro-choice like Rudy is nominated, many have threatened to bolt the coalition.

With all due respect, advancing a candidate that is opposed to the views of many coalition members is what ends the coalition.
