Report: Former Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Defecting to U.S.

TEHRAN, Iran — The mystery of a missing former Iranian deputy defense minister deepened Wednesday with the report by an Arab newspaper that he is being interviewed somewhere in northern Europe before defecting to the U.S.

Retired Revolutionary Guards general Ali Reza Asghari disappeared in Turkey nearly a month ago and reportedly hopes to seek asylum in the United States, according to a report in the London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat.

The newspaper quoted senior Iranian sources as saying Asghari is headed for the United States "along with the secrets he carried."

A Senior U.S. official told FOX News that Asghari is not in CIA hands but said that it's a "mystery" why he disappeared "and the U.S. intelligence community is seeking more clarity."

Al-Sharq al-Awsat reported that Asghari is being questioned by intelligence personnel before being transferred to the United States.

Asghari was supposed to arrive at an Istanbul hotel nearly a month ago after being in Damascus but several reports said he never arrived.

Iran's top police chief said Tuesday he thought Asghari was abducted by Western intelligence services, an Iranian news agency reported.

Iran's top police chief, Gen. Esmaeil Ahmadi Moghaddam, said Iran was investigating the fate of Asghari through the Turkish police.

"It is likely that Asghari has been abducted by the Western intelligence services," IRNA quoted the Iranian police general as saying. The general did not elaborate.

In Turkey, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday it was investigating the matter, but would not confirm or deny that Asghari had disappeared or been kidnapped.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry had asked the Interior Ministry to investigate following a report from the Iranian Embassy in Ankara.

>>Lets hope they are right. He has knowledge of where the Nuke site are!!!!!!<<

Even if he doesn't this is so much better than dealing with the fallout of Israel snatching him from inside a Nato ally.

He is being interviewed by Jack Bauer and we believe that the locations of the nuke sites that he has disclosed will be accurate. {His family certainly hope that this will be true.}

You know that the left wing and the scum in the media are going to immediately call him the Chalabi of Iran, even if he really isn't.

Well as we have seen from our own lovely Dimocrats, just because one lives here doesn`t mean one will help or support the country, but I can imagine they will make deals with him unless the Dimocrats interfere or try to interfere again, probably by claiming he is being tortured.

I don't believe that he was snatched. That's a dangerous game to start up, because two can play at it, and our people would be treated a lot worse than theirs.

This looks like a real defection. If the guy is a patriot instead of a zealot, it makes sense. A Muslim fanatic like Ahmedinajad may not care if Iran survives the next 10 years, but a Persian nationalist might. To that end, he might be willing to commit treason against his government to save his nation from suicide. If you or I were in his shoes, knowing what he knows and where it's all leading, it makes a lot of sense.

The Mullahs are itching to start a fight that could get them blown off the map. If you care more about heaven than Iran, then there's no downside to that. Perhaps the Defense Minister had a change of heart, and decided that he loves Persia more than Islam?

Hmmmm... Perhaps he's the Minister of Disinformation. Hopefully his intelligence info can be corroborated.

Otherwise, this is incredible.

You can bet Iran will try and move those sites if they can. We need to hit them BEFORE they move anything.

Wouldn't we be watching for this? Can't be easy or quick to move. If they start moving things, we will probably have eyes in the sky and see what they've got.

He may have been working for US for a while and circumstances dictated he get of Dodge now.

To be honest, this is exactly what I think. Given his placement, and the overall timing of the event, that's an interestingly ominious sign.

It could be coincidence, in that he felt he was going to be discovered at this particular time. Still, if there were any real suspicion on him, he and his family would have been closely watched. Certainly not allowed to travel to Istanbul.

That makes me believe that there is another reason he wanted to leave. And that's generating some very wild speculation in my head. ;-)

That doesn't say much or narrow anything down Puppage.
Is it Del Boca Vista Phase I, II, or III?
The difference could mean a Kramer Presidency!

That was my first thought. I'm hesitant to believe someone trusted to keep Iranian military secrets would be so eager to tell the United States government everything he knows.

It happened often enough with people trusted to keep Soviet military secrets, and Ivan was the best in the world at the intelligence game. Not everyone in Iran is crazy.
