Barbie Bandits "Down The Wrong Road"
MSNBC/Newsweek ^ | March 6, 2007 | Rachel Pomerance and Arian Campo-Flores

Posted on 03/07/2007 6:13:50 AM PST by JoeGar

Enter the Shooter Alley strip club in Doraville, Ga., and you'll find plenty of naked young women entertaining their male clients, writhing and shaking only inches away from their faces. It was there that two dancers, Ashley Miller (known as "Adrienne") and Heather Johnston (who went by "Charlie"), met recently and became fast friends. The pairing proved ill-fated. Both were reportedly on a destructive tear. Johnston, 19, was heavily using drugs, according to a fellow stripper at the club. And Miller, 18, had struck up with a reputed drug dealer. The two reached a nadir last week when they robbed a bank in Acworth, Ga.
Miller and Johnston became a media sensation. Caught on a security camera wearing designer shades and giggling as they made off with the loot, they became known as the "Barbie Bandits." They were so sloppy that cops cracked the case in two days, arresting Miller, Johnston, the bank teller—who police say was in cahoots with the two—and Miller's male companion, who allegedly hatched the plot. Now the four face a mix of theft and drug-related charges. But the most intriguing question remains: How did two girls who grew up in comfortable middle-class homes with a wealth of opportunity wind up as exotic dancers and accused crooks?

"Both of these "girls" were absolutely accountable for their actions and behavior,"

Yes at 18 but if it is not something that was enforced by their parents as children then NO that is not the case. You cant say that a child who has been abused its whole life (not saying that these girls were by any means) is then emotionally stable to make rationale decisions. These girls probably had absent fathers who let them do as they pleased and rewarded them with money and gifts instead of the attention that they wanted.

"That was the only way they could pay (for college expenses)." That is NEVER true. It is selling your soul to dance at strip joints, and all the rationalizing in the world won't make it other.

i didn't say they were all moral, christian, conservative girls. its hard to compromise your morals when you don't have many to start with.

Apparently my offer to the two girls of using my remote cabin as a hide out was not taken advantage of.

Choosing to undress in front of drunken men is immoral, sinful for some, stupid, submissive to exploitation, and dangerous.

Funny ... but I don't feel exploitive or dangerous. ;-)

Yes at 18 but if it is not something that was enforced by their parents as children then NO that is not the case.

What do you want, competency hearings before you become a licensed adult? Either 18 year olds are adults or they are not. At some point, people must be responsible for their own decisions, regardless of their history. For far too long, people such as yourself have confused the difference between having a reason for an action and having an excuse for it.

Having "absent fathers who let them do as they pleased and rewarded them with money and gifts instead of the attention that they wanted," may be a reason these "girls" want to prolong their adolescence indefinitely, but it is not an excuse for doing so and shifting the blame. If they are so mentally deficient as to not know right from wrong at the age of 18, then they should be institutionalized or made permanent wards of their caregivers and not allowed out in society. But both of us know that is not the case; they do know the difference and chose to do wrong anyway. One of the reasons they felt justified in doing so is because people like you consistently excuse the behavior as someone else's fault. It's their own fault and no one else's.

I know you are right but I just don't get it. And the urban black culture is no unattractive in so many ways - the grills on the teeth, the huge chains and necklaces (cheesy), undies hanging out; and the weird walks they often have.

I'll say one thing though, I think movies like "Hustle and Flow" tend to glorify this lifestyle. I wish they'd be a lot more realistic than they are. They should show way more movies like Trainspotting, as far as I'm concerned.

I know a lot of people think like you but those girls could have been raised just fine; they may have come from Christian homes, with parents intact, etc. I don't know the details. The point I want to make is that if anyone thinks for one second that putting in all the right ingredients is a guarantee, they are naive and don't know anything about human nature.

James Dobson used to tell a funny story of a family with 5 kids that were just perfect; these people ran roughshod over all their church friends, always telling them what they were doing wrong with THEIR kids. Since their kids all excelled in school and were model children in every way, they really felt they had done everything right. Well..... as Dobson says, they had a little surprise baby, a boy, and it turns out little darling was hell on wheels. They did everything but the little strong-willed kid wasn't like the other 5. Suddenly, they shut up.

One of my OB/GYN RN students got through school via stripping (But she also had a horrific homelife).

For her it was part money and part getting even. :)
