BAGHDAD, March 6, 2007 — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Gulf Region Division completed 64 construction projects between Feb. 23 and March 4, 2007 – bringing the total number of completed projects to 11, 395. Currently, there are 1,696 construction projects ongoing – all funded through the Iraq Relief and Reconstruction Fund, the Development Fund for Iraq, the Commander’s Emergency Response Program, the Economic Support Fund and the Iraq Security Forces Fund.

“Clean, accessible drinking water is tantamount to good health, and access to fuel helps improve the burgeoning economy here. We are committed to seeing that the Iraqis are delivered these essential services.”

Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh, commander of the Gulf Region Division

One of the completed projects is a petrol station in the Adhamiyah district of Baghdad. The $145,400 project renovated the station by constructing security walls and gates, building guard houses and repairing and repainting exterior walls and canopies. The division is working on 18 petrol station renovation projects in Baghdad.

Another completed project is the $28.3-million Mosul electrical substation rehabilitation project in Ninewa Province. The project expanded the substation’s capacity to receive power from Turkey, Syria, the Mosul Gas Turbine and the Mosul Dam; and distribute the power to the national grid – benefiting approximately 4 million people.

Work recently began on the $1.2 million Sen El Thebban water project in Kirkuk Province.

The project will construct a water intake system, backup generator, transformers, concrete ground storage tanks, perimeter wall and pipeline distribution network. There is no water treatment in this area.

“Ensuring that Iraqis have access to clean drinking water and gasoline to fuel their cars is a priority of the government of Iraq; therefore, it’s a priority of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,” said Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh, commander of the Gulf Region Division. “Clean, accessible drinking water is tantamount to good health, and access to fuel helps improve the burgeoning economy here. We are committed to seeing that the Iraqis are delivered these essential services.”

The results of these efforts have improved the quality of life for all Iraqis:

• Due to added capacity and normal operation and maintenances of systems, electrical generation is at 4,073 megawatts, serving more than 300,000 homes with an end goal of 6,000 MW and 1.3 million homes served. Electrical generation megawatts are dynamic, owing to interdiction of lines by insurgents and unscheduled maintenance.

• Potable water is at 441,300 m3/day with 2.3 million people affected with an end goal of 1.1 million m3/day and an end goal of 5.2 million people affected.

• Crude oil production is at 2.5 million barrels per day with an end goal of 3 million BPD. LPG production capacity is at 1,700 metric tons per day, with an end goal of 3,000 metric tons per day.

Throughout Iraq, U.S. government ongoing projects contribute to the ever-improving quality of life and economic stability – helping provide the foundation for the country to build upon as it overcomes a generation of neglect.
