Ann Coulter fired back at critics who demanded the conservative columnist apologize for comments she made during a speech in which she referred to Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards as a "faggot."
"'Faggot isn't offensive to gays; it has nothing to do with gays," Coulter said on "Hannity and Colmes" Monday night. "It's a schoolyard taunt meaning 'wuss,' and unless you're telling me that John Edwards is gay, it was not applied to a gay person."

"What! can the devil speak true?"
Thanks. Interesting that you're the only one who remarked. LOL...that also says something.
When we were kids....60 years ago, we called one kid a little fairy. He probably wasn't gay but he sure was a wimpy little kid who didn't play baseball, marbles, mumbly peg etc.. He just wasn't normal...He was just like Edwards. We were little then. As we got older, we used the grown up word fag to describe him.
You think thats hateful?
Let me try again.
Ann is an attention whore. A narcissist. Its got to be about her. And I for one am sick of her.
I'll never buy another of her books.
Yet John Kerry expected all the smart people to believe that he was making a joke about the president when he disparaged our soldiers about their intelligence.
Hey FRiend, that is YOUR right.
You're so gay.
"Apparently our top three Republican nominees aren't that smart," Coulter said. "And by the way, if they're going to start apologizing for everything I say, they better keep that statement handy cause there's going to be a lot more in the next year."
Well, I am feeling pretty happy today. ;-)
What are you talking about? That is EXACTLY how I took it!
It is commonly used as a term to state "wimp" or "weakling".
Edwards is a light weight.
Calling him the Breck Girl does not mean he is a cross dresser it is to state he is weak and only an image over substance.
The 64,000 dollar question.
In fact it should be asked of ALL candates!
How do you KNOW?
Did NJ know their governor was a homosexual?
How about the fact the Miami Herald said they were complicit in activly ASSISTING Mark Foley in staying in the closset despit their having pictures of him with his "life partner" (between the pages relationships on the side) attending public events together as a couple.
All edwards has to do is say he is not and the controversy dies quickly.
The public has a right to know WHAT they are electing.
Someone should explain to Coulter that she isn't in England. In the U.S. faggot means exactly what she thought it meant when she said it.
Ann, just stop. Nevermind, she's an attention whore always on the prowl for her next john.
You many have a point there. There are a lot of different slurs. Some are funny. Some are long forgotten. Some are just versions of what a given group calls itself. Some have been "reclaimed" by such groups. And some are beyond the pale. They have come to sound harsher. And part of the reason why they came to be regarded as more serious may have been because the sounds they contain are in fact more gutteral or plosive.
So if Coulter had called Edwards a "girlie man" or the "Breck Girl," there wouldn't have been many complaints. Ditto for "sissy" or "sissy boy." She could probably have gotten away with alleging that he was a "paintywaist" or "dual-gated" or "light in the loafers," since most people don't use such expressions in real life. If she'd said he was "gay" it might have caused a stir, since he probably isn't homosexual. But "faggot" is more serious than such expressions.
I don't understand when and how faggot became a dirty word, almost as bad as nigger.
Probably it does have a lot to do with the gay movement. But was it ever something you could say in polite society on television and get away with? Weren't people always awkward or ashamed of using the word if they cared about social approval? Strangely, though, it was probably easier to get away with "fag." Maybe the long form implies more deliberation and malice aforethought.
I'll be sure to buy an extra copy, print inside the cover "Donated by JRochelle of FreeRepublic" and hand deliver it to the local public library.
Sqeamish so called "conservatives" bring out the devil in me.
:-p
LOL.
Its not squemishness. Its recognizing stupidity and not defending it.
What she did was low class and stupid.
