Ann Coulter Fires Back at Critics Over John Edwards 'Faggot' Barb

Ann Coulter fired back at critics who demanded the conservative columnist apologize for comments she made during a speech in which she referred to Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards as a "faggot."

"'Faggot isn't offensive to gays; it has nothing to do with gays," Coulter said on "Hannity and Colmes" Monday night. "It's a schoolyard taunt meaning 'wuss,' and unless you're telling me that John Edwards is gay, it was not applied to a gay person."

Baloney. If I called a co-worker a "faggot," I'd be sent to sensitivity training post-haste.

I agree with her, since I work regularly with youth, that the young toss the word "faggot" around as a pejorative that doesn't necessarily mean they think the person is a homosexual.

That is true. It is also true that youth routinely call people motherf--ers, without really meaning that they committed incest with their mom. They call people c--ks---ers without really meaning that people engage in fellatio. The fact that the pejoritive is used without really meaning the sexual connotation doesn't mean that it would be offensive for me to call you a motherf---er or a c--ks---er.

Furthermore, Ann Coulter is not a "youth." She's older than I am, and I can't get away with being called a youth anymore.

Big difference. Kerry's "joke" a soggy, leaden unfunny mess. Ann's joke was funny, tied into an incredibly absurd piece of current pop-culture news, and, (probably accidentally) exposed a bunch of "conservative" bloggers as humorless schoolmarms tut-tutting over a long-lost (and mostly imagined) "civlility in political discourse".

If you want to see political incivility, go read the "blogs" of the 1770's -- broadsheets and newspapers of the time, that make Ann's remark look tame.

I think that reducing the word to "f" word in the same way we reduce another to "the N word" is entirely new to me. The word faggot has surely not reached that same level.

I guarantee you that the young I know (nor anyone anymore) uses the "N" word.

Lots of folks use "faggot" all the time....especially the young. And, as I said, a faggot is a "flaming gay," the mind-boggling effeminate kind.

It's not even close to debatable that "faggot" isn't offensive. Webster's identifies it as a "contemptuous word" that is "usually disparaging."
