Cursing is the futile effort of a feeble mind to express itself. Considering that statement, it is no surprise to find more cursing on Left Wing blogs than on Right Wing blogs.

Lazy adjectives. Used when a thought provoking adjective cannot be comprehended or thought of to fill the space.

"Lazy adjectives. Used when a thought provoking adjective cannot be comprehended or thought of to fill the space." I've always thought of profanity like a strong spice or salt. When used judiciously and where appropriate, they can add to the piquancy of a written or oral communication. When overused, they quickly become unpalatable, and the temptation is great for a chef of lesser skill to try and mask otherwise bland fare. I'm not against the use of coarse language, only its inappropriate and indiscriminate use.

In the 50's they all would have wound up in Federal prison for making death threats to our President and his cabinet. Each and every one of them would have been rounded up before the day was over.
I really do miss J. Edgar Hoover. The days of decisive action and rule of Law are dead.

It is not the cursing per se [which could be done in a virtuoso fashion] that is objectionable, it is the unimaginative, trite and boring nature shown by much of today's cursing. I used to know a couple of people whose cursing could wilt a potted cactus, and a third one who came close.

Then it can be said that the use of profanity is, well rather niggardly?
To: Joe 6-pack

When overused, they quickly become unpalatable, and the temptation is great for a chef of lesser skill to try and mask otherwise bland fare. Those foul mouth ^&%%@ !&@*#& son's of *&$^$# with their ^*((^%$$ language; *^%^ *^&*& rat (^^&ing (&(*%$#^. They're just a bunch of *&%& *^%$ **&^%% and probably &*^%% *(&^^ ^%$**& with their close relatives.
They just don't have the talent to write like I do.

I suppose it depends on your purposes for engaging in the conversation. If you see the conversation as a competition in which your purpose is to win the argument by bullying, insulting, and intimidating your opponent, then using coarse language is the correct approach. However, if your purpose is to lay out the facts in an effort to arrive at truth, or to help the other person see the truth, coarse language causes you to miss this mark entirely. People quit listening when you introduce that kind of language into an otherwise reasonable debate. People who have the truth on their side do not need to supplement it by cursing.

You think of all communication as debate? Sometimes, even in a debate, an off-color phrase introduces an element of humor that can disarm the opposition or win over some of the fence sitters.
In other circumstances, its use is virtually mandatory for the purposes of realism (imagine a war novel or movie where the harshest vulgarities are "darn-tootin'" or "geeze.")
