Shuttle Pilot: Nowak Showed No Emotion
AP ^ | March 6, 2007 | MIKE SCHNEIDER

ORLANDO, Fla. - The space shuttle pilot at the center of a bizarre love triangle that now has astronaut Lisa Nowak facing attempted kidnapping charges told detectives Nowak "seemed a little disappointed" but accepting when he told her he was dating another woman, court records released Tuesday show.

That conversation was in January. On Feb. 5, Nowak drove 900 miles from Houston to Orlando to confront the other woman.

Police say Nowak, a mother of three, donned a wig and followed Colleen Shipman from an airport terminal to her car to confront her, then pepper sprayed her through a cracked window when Shipman wouldn't unlock the door. Police who arrested Nowak and searched her car reported finding a BB-gun, new steel mallet, knife and rubber tubing.

Nowak, 43, pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping and burglary with assault and was released on bond with an ankle monitoring device.

Investigation documents released late Monday and Tuesday by the Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office discuss shed some light on the astronauts' relationships.

They include the shuttle pilot, Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein's, conversations with detectives about the romantic relationship he had had with Nowak since 2004 and how she reacted with no emotion when he said he was dating another woman.

"She seemed a little disappointed, but she seemed to be accepting of that," Oefelein told detectives, according to the documents.

The documents also include an undated letter to Oefelein's mother in which Nowak wrote that she was taking steps to divorce her husband so she could be with Oefelein.

"Bill is absolutely the best person I've ever known and I love him more than I knew possible," Nowak wrote.

A NASA spokesman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

Since her arrest, Nowak, has told police that her relationship with Oefelein was more than a working relationship but less than a romantic one. But Oefelein, 41, told investigators they had been romantically involved since 2004.

Nowak's frantic road trip to confront Shipman _ she wore adult diapers to avoid having to stop for breaks _ may have been sparked after she uncovered steamy e-mails Shipman sent to Oefelein, including one he received during his mission aboard the shuttle Discovery in December, according to documents released Monday. The e-mails do not mention Nowak.

"First urge will be to rip your clothes off," Shipman wrote to Oefelein. "But honestly, love, I want you to totally and thoroughly enjoy your hero's homecoming."

I've noticed your postings for awhile, and you do apparently have followers. I can't understand why, but you do.

I feel kind of bad for her. In her NASA photos, she looked in control of herself. I think she just got enamored of this guy, and and wanted him to like, or love her. She probably gave up a decent marriage to chase this dream. Very sad. Its a common situation though.

It is also instructive to consider what anyone else might do spending 99 out of 100 hours away from their family

...something called integrity, principle, commitment to vows comes to mind...

...of which the Lisa Nowak types are deficient ...

It never ceases to amaze me how every post somehow disintegrates into a personal posting battle between 2 or more people. It takes a lot of time to sift thru this garbage to read the gossip about the love triangle.

I told you the evidence. The facts are that Bill O. has admitted to an affair, which to most people means they were carrying on romantically and secretly behind the backs of their spouses. Bill O. further details the break-up and his conversations with Shipman regarding same. Again, to most people, breaking up means two people who had a romantic or dating relationship have gone their separate ways. Finally, Bill O.'s ex-mother-in-law initally told the press that Lisa had broken her daughter's heart. To most people, that would mean that Lisa became a rival of Bill O.'s wife for his affections, and Lisa won that round.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience, Mel. This very important thread should not be clouded with such drivel. I will now go away and slit my throat. Gurgle...gurgle...

What an interesting way of insulting fellow FReepers. I dont think anyone follows or leads anyone here. I think a lot of people share opinions, and others (even you) tell others what they think of those opinions. Some opinions are asinine IMHO, but others might disagree.

When I post, which is becoming a rare thing these days, I do so primarily to provide balance and sometimes some objectivity. In this instance, those more familiar with me would understand why I might choose to defend the CDR, and others might just find my morality suspect.

To me, there is ONE point of view that should hold sway, and that is, just what do we actually KNOW about this event? From your posts and others, I would gather 'not much'. In addition, it always pains me to see this site devolve into a right-wing mirror of the angry, negative lefty blogs.

Often, in our zeal to appear holier-than-thou, and unexperienced with human failure, we come off as a less than serious opposition to the other side.

Other than that, I still think you are an ass.

I have asked you to define 'affair', because you have no direct knowledge of what the word might mean in this case.

Pukin, I don't know why you're stuck on parsing the word 'affair'....

...You might not like Cecily's comments, but on this thread she's making a lot more sense than you, and you have major credibility at FR.
(I don't even know Cecily!)

Whassup with you????

"I do so primarily to provide balance and sometimes some objectivity."

How haughty of you. Your big head is slaying any value that might be found in your words. And your once again pronouncement of my being an ass, doesn't help little boy. Now you've done it... you've dragged me down to your level.

As officers neither party is subject to Naval discipline?

Sorry, dog that's just plain wrong.

Having an affair with a married woman, fellow officer in the same unit is definately against the UCMJ.

CDR O admitted to it. That's all she wrote for him.

In the Army it's called "zipper problems" as in:

Q - Why did Colonel Smith have to retire all of a sudden, he was a sure bet to make general?

A - Zipper problems

Couldn't keep it in his pants, got caught up in the I'm-a-too-important-special-leader-warrior complex.

The fact is they'll replace you with someone just as good in a heartbeat

I'm sure he was a great guy, but the bottom line is he screwed up bigtime in the personal judgement department. The most important thing that is expected from an officer. None of the services are especially forgiving of this kind of behavior.

The Navy's full of great pilots You'll get along without him just fine

And I take exception to the pressures while deployed arguement. I'm going over 900 days since 2002 in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Pakistan and Afghanistan and in my observation a lot more people don't screw around on their spouses than do.

The Anna Nicole story was less pathetic and less sleazy than this one. She is a non story.

How many meanings could the word have in this case, other than the standard one from Merriem-Webster:

"affair: romantic or passionate attachment typically of limited duration"

Bill O. says they had an affair that lasted for some time. Bill and Lisa were married when the affair started. Bill subsequently got divorced, and ex-mom-in-law started to dish the dirt on him to the press before someone asked her not to continue or she thought better of it. Lisa's marriage went on the rocks, and she was in the process of getting a divorce. How can you draw any conclusion other than these two people were cheating on their spouses and both wrecked their marriages? Beyond that, Lisa became so emotionally unhinged when Bill O. moved on that she attacked another woman and now faces jail and a wrecked career. I very much doubt that all this has happened as the result of a completely innocent, aboveboard friendship or work relationship between Bill O. and Lisa.

I'm going to make this point just once.

I am waiting for someone to show me anything ANYWHERE to suggest that actual SEX took place. Until then, nobody knows what they are talking about here.

You can argue that romance or attachment to another is problematic, but how on earth do any of you know specifically what occured?

Answer: You dont.

'Affair' can mean many things, romantic or not.
