New Yorkers Lead In S.C. Primary Poll (Hillary and Giuliani)

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York are leading their respective primaries in South Carolina, according to a poll by Winthrop University released today.

Pollsters asked 694 people their opinions of the current candidates.

Clinton led with a nearly 82 percent favorable rating among Democrats over John Edwards, who had 70 percent, and Barack Obama, who had 67 percent.

Giuliani led Republicans in the polls with 76 percent favorable rating within the party. John McCain had a 57 percent favorable rating.

Forty percent of those polled were not familiar with Mitt Romney.

The Winthrop Poll for spring was conducted via telephone between Feb. 7 and Feb. 28, with 694 randomly selected South Carolinians age 18 and up. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.72 percent.

The S.C. Democratic primary is Jan. 29 and the Republican primary is tentatively Feb. 2

As a Duncan Hunter supporter I am choosing not to engage in debate on this Rudy Giuliani thread on Free Republic. As a freeper I am disappointed that there are fans of a liberal presidential candidate trying to push socially liberal views on this socially conservative forum. In particular, I have noticed that the Rudy G fans do not answer posts questioning the qualitative substance of their candidate, or the posts are met merely with insults.

Disclaimer: as of now, I would vote for Duncan Hunter in the primary; and if it's close between Rudy and Mitt, I'd vote Mitt.

Ok, that said, you're wrong. The main difference---it may only be a perceived one at this point---between Rudy and Bush is that Rudy will actually FIGHT libs on those issues he cares about. He fought the civil rights establishment in NYC over the NYPD; he backed down the Arabs on several occasions. Who knows what this really means, but the perception right now, MADE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT BY THE LIBBY VERDICT is that Republicans want someone who will knock the crap out of the Dems---actually go after them.

I think this plays in the South.

Again, it is not yet clear if Rudy CAN do this on many issues, or will do it, but the perception is that WHOEVER does it will be the candidate.

You realize that the majority of voters don't follow the news on TV or in the press, much less on the Internet or talk radio. To most of them, right now, Rudy is just a name they've heard somewhere--perhaps in connection with 9/11 heroism. That's it.

I know this for sure because I teach adult education classes to people who have degrees and hold responsible jobs. But very few of them are able to discuss current events without being "briefed" on whatever has been in the press for weeks and even months.

You're a typical Rudymaniac. You have your fingers in your ears chanting na na na na I can't hear you. You asked me if I voted for Kerry and I answered you and told you why.
I never mentioned anything about Rudy's "combat activity". Rudy has had absolutely nothing to do with the military and war fighting, ever. He actively avoided the draft. He has never had a position that dealt with oversight of the military or war fighting. Kerry was, indeed, far more experienced on these issues than Rudy.
And, BTW, President Bush was a fighter pilot flying cold war anti-interdiction missions along the US coast. You might not remember, but these missions were considered essential to the protection of the US from possible soviet air attacks. This is military experience in my book.

If you're talking about the issues, he would be totally wrong on them. Yet you said that Rudy has no combat experience and that his only virtue on the issue of terrorism is tough talk.
