New Yorkers Lead In S.C. Primary Poll (Hillary and Giuliani)
Charlotte Observer ^ | 3/6/07

Posted on 03/06/2007 1:46:18 PM PST by areafiftyone

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York are leading their respective primaries in South Carolina, according to a poll by Winthrop University released today.

Pollsters asked 694 people their opinions of the current candidates.

Clinton led with a nearly 82 percent favorable rating among Democrats over John Edwards, who had 70 percent, and Barack Obama, who had 67 percent.

Giuliani led Republicans in the polls with 76 percent favorable rating within the party. John McCain had a 57 percent favorable rating.

Forty percent of those polled were not familiar with Mitt Romney.

The Winthrop Poll for spring was conducted via telephone between Feb. 7 and Feb. 28, with 694 randomly selected South Carolinians age 18 and up. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.72 percent.

The S.C. Democratic primary is Jan. 29 and the Republican primary is tentatively Feb. 2

Bush isn't that great of a communicator, and has trouble stringing sentences together during press conferences. That does not inspire confidence-- some even console themselves by thinking Bush is a puppet for sinister forces behind the scenes, rather than face the possibility that he's really not that intelligent.

Giuliani makes the case that we can't make the bad guys go away by having a vote on it. The Revolutionary Islamists are at war with us, whether we fight for freedom or not. They don't hate us because we sometimes fail to live up to our ideals -- they hate us *because* of our ideals. One Giuliani saying this stuff is worth more than a 100 Hagels who aren't.

President Giuliani in 2008! Law and Order. Solid Judges. Free Markets. Killing Terrorists.

If his past is any indication, we will have:

Law and Order... As long as that doesn't include immigration law, laws supporting the Second Amendment or any other laws Rudy personally doesn't like.

Solid Judges ... As long as the judges are liberals like he appointed in NY.

Free markets... Does this mean rent control for the whole Country?

Killing terrorists... He hasn't been involved in this or any other military activity in the past. He actively avoided the draft. But hey, he sure sounds tough.

Sorry, you are asking any conservative to swallow too much.

I'm originally from south Carolina and I'm sick and tired of some people on this site inferring we southerners are too ill informed to have any knowledge of what goes on in the rest of the country. Rudy was man of the year the press spent plenty of ink telling us all about Rudy. Until he dropped out of a senate race against Hill the press spilled lots of ink informing the whole country about Rudy's foibels. Some of us stupid rednecks can read and some of us in a time of war want to do whatever it takes to win.

Hillary is a carpet bagger who relocated to New York as a planned move for her chance to get into White House. She had inside Polling surveys done, to determine where she was most popular, to guarantee her a victory.

New York was the place, but then, you are the last person to be told that. You knew that before most of us did.

I believe her home State was Arkansas? (I'm not sure where she was born.)

She's actually from Illinois.

One can occasionally discern a Midwestern lilt in her accent - that's when she's not attempting a Butterfly McQueen impersonation.

Sorry you keep writing that talk will carry the day for the GOP. Facts on the ground does not need talk.

Immediately following 911 many sought to find out why they hate us. Rudy is among the realists who know we have done nothing--except be infidels marked for death. The author of Londonistan posits most of Britain sees Israel as occupiers and Palestinians as oppressed--while the truth is nothing of the sort.

Rudy would not abide Arafat's presence nor the magnanimous sheik's insinuation America had got what it deserved.

Because after all, Rudy is very bullish on America--in a way we've not seen since [thunderbolt] Ronald Reagan.

We're ready for that shining city on the hill to re-emerge from the Unholy Alliance's slanders.

I'm from the Midwest, she is hard to nail down, since she became a master of impersonating a woman.

If want to make a case for action, on, let us say, the Iranian nuclear program, you're going to have to talk about it.

Otherwise, the Dems will tell their banal narrative of Western Imperialism for Oil Companies UNCONTESTED, and many people will believe it. We as Republicans have the right to make our case on this.

One, Rudy's economic policies are generally good. Rudy is an opponent of Hillarycare, is for school choice, cut taxes 23 times, and removed NYC's corrupt affirmative action program for businesses, among other things. I agree with you that rent control sucks, but in New York City, opposing it means losing the votes of elderly people and others dependent on it. There is a limit to how conservative you can be and still get things done, especially in New York City.

On war, certainly you know that ideas matter. If the extent of military service mattered, we would blindly support Wes Clark, who was wounded in 'Nam and became Supreme Commander of NATO. Understanding what Revolutionary Islam is about is especially important for the future of our country, and I'm surprised you don't take that as seriously as the obnoxious rent control policy.

On social matters, again, Giuliani has been fighting in the trenches, cleaning up the streets over the objections of clowns like Sharpton, standing up to anti-Christian publically funded art, cracking down on pornographers and prostitutes and so forth. If Rudy can accomplish this much in the most liberal city in the country, I'm willing to listen to his agenda for America's future.

Socially here is what Rudy COULD (not will it's all hypothetical right now)

1. Another ban on EBR ownership, this time a more comprehensive one.
2. Firearms makers sued out of exitence
3. Gun and knife shows banned.

Homosexuals:
1. Throwing out don't ask, don't tell
2. no support for the protection of marriage amendment
3. Domestic partnerships legislation
Abortion:
1. Crap shoot on judges, more than likley liberal ones will be appointed by a Rudy presidency.
2. More funding for planned parenthood's "condoms on cucumbers" type programs.
3. Expanded federal money going to fetal stem cell research.

Rudy may be a terror warrior, but on social issues, he may not be a conservatives choice.

"we" need to decide what exactly a conservatives "is" and is "not"

I almost would rather lose and let Hilliary implement those things that I listed, then have to spend another 8 years trying to justify a Republican President destroying conservatism.
