Alec Guinness, as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars

The cloak is expected to fetch more than £40,000

The cloak worn by Sir Alec Guinness in Star Wars is among a collection of iconic film and television costumes set to go under the hammer.

Sean Connery's dinner jacket from the Bond movie Thunderball and costumes from Harry Potter are also among the 350 lots to be auctioned at Bonhams.

They are being sold by London-based costume maker Angels.

Auctioneers expect the plain, brown robe of Guinness's character, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to fetch at least £40,000.

But Guinness, who died in 2000, was not the only one to have worn the garment.

The cloak went missing for three decades, during which time it was loaned to other films including 1999's The Mummy, and was even hired out as fancy dress.

It seemed the right time for us to allow collectors and fans the chance to take home a piece of the movie magic

It was only rediscovered in 2005 during a stock check, and later formed part of a film memorabilia exhibition in London.

Bonhams has transformed its salesroom into a star's dressing room to give prospective buyers the chance to try on their favourite costumes.

Other highlights from the collection are Madonna's dresses from Evita, costumes from the Indiana Jones films, Titanic and Doctor Who, and the Batman and Robin suits from Only Fools and Horses .

Tim Angel, chairman of Angels, has said that while he was sad to see many of the items go, it was an unavoidable decision.

"The flip-side of creating such iconic costumes, that become so very famous and so firmly associated with key movies, is that they can never be used in other films or productions, nor can they be made available from our fancy dress shop," he said.

"With over a century and a half's worth of costumes on the racks, each with ever increasing insurance requirements, and space at a premium, it seemed the right time for us to allow collectors and fans the chance to take home a piece of the movie magic."
