I have seen ROFLMAO or ROTFLMAO used many times on this website and assumed that most people understood that it means-'rolling on the floor laughing my a** off.'

Why do you assume that most people know that fact? You didn't understand mine and I know many people who understand completely what I said to you. The trouble is when people use such abbreviations you eliminate a portion of your audience, force another portion to have to take time to translate what you could have avoided by just using the English Language properly and communicating with everyone instead of just being hip with your closed community of friends.
