CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards says Jesus would be appalled at how the United States has ignored the plight of the suffering, and that he believes children should have private time to pray at school.
Edwards, in an interview with the Web site Beliefnet.com, said Jesus would be most upset with the selfishness of Americans and the country's willingness to go to war "when it's not necessary."
"I think that Jesus would be disappointed in our ignoring the plight of those around us who are suffering and our focus on our own selfish short-term needs," Edwards told the site. "I think he would be appalled, actually."
Edwards also said he was against teacher-led prayers in public schools, but he added that "allowing time for children to pray for themselves, to themselves, I think is not only OK, I think it's a good thing."
In the interview, the former North Carolina senator discussed how he lost touch with his day-to-day faith during college, but that it "came roaring back" after the death of his 16-year-old son, Wade, in 1996.

This kind of talk from a politician is usually a lead-in to some kind of discussion of entitlement programs. You know, "compassion".
"Those darned Americans don't want to pay high taxes to support welfare bums! How un-Christian of them."
And I guess Jesus would really love John making all that money off those crippled children......
That's just gay.
""I think that Jesus would be disappointed in our ignoring the plight of those around us who are suffering and our focus on our own selfish short-term needs, except of course, for those filthy Iraqis. EWWWWW!! We don't want to help them and ease their TRUE suffering..."
Edwards is little more then an ambulance chaser.
A low life lawyer.
And one of the worst of those, a baby doctor destroyer.
Bigger than my old high school.
Isn't Ewards party that won't allow pray time in school
Edwards sounds like a "wingnut Christofascists."

I think we can look at the story of Matthews for that answer
I just don't see Edwards giving up his career and money to follow Jesus
"To themselves" no less. What good does it do to pray to oneself? I guess when you come from the party that thinks man is god then that would be the logical choice.
I can well imagine that. :0)
He's channeling Jesus now.
This must be from the Democratic playbook -- reaching out (AKA pandering) to the religious. Gov. Blagojevich here the other day basically said that unless we have state-funded universal health insurance, we are going against "the way God intended it."
It kind of makes you want to gag, doesn't it? I don't mind genuine references to God and religion in public life (e.g., Lincoln's Second Inaugural) and I think we could use more of it, but not in the form of phony platitudes from phony politicians.
I don't know, I think several guys named "Jesus" come across our southern border everyday and are happy to be here.
What else could we expect from someone who amassed a large fortune by chasing ambulances?
You can have Boston, Massachusettes back if you want it.
You can even re-institute your tea tax on them as you please.
Ditto.
