CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards says Jesus would be appalled at how the United States has ignored the plight of the suffering, and that he believes children should have private time to pray at school.
Edwards, in an interview with the Web site Beliefnet.com, said Jesus would be most upset with the selfishness of Americans and the country's willingness to go to war "when it's not necessary."
"I think that Jesus would be disappointed in our ignoring the plight of those around us who are suffering and our focus on our own selfish short-term needs," Edwards told the site. "I think he would be appalled, actually."
Edwards also said he was against teacher-led prayers in public schools, but he added that "allowing time for children to pray for themselves, to themselves, I think is not only OK, I think it's a good thing."
In the interview, the former North Carolina senator discussed how he lost touch with his day-to-day faith during college, but that it "came roaring back" after the death of his 16-year-old son, Wade, in 1996.

Edwards: Any child that gets past our Liberal abortions, has the right to thank God for it.
Let's not forget this jerk bringing up Mary Cheney's sexual orientation during the debates...just what Jesus would do, I know. Pffft!
And I haven't even gotten into the peculiar arrival of his last two children.
Bah!
This picture of the long suffering Edwards is as funny as the one of him primping for a debate last election. LOL.
...and if there's one thing a rich lawyer living in a mansion knows about, it's Jesus.
Ask Edwards what Christ thinks about abortion.
What is amazing is that Jesus doesn't strike down the doctor-suing sleezebag Edwards for his unmeasurable hypocrisy regarding the "plight" of the poor....
Jesus came to heal the sick.....
You can bet Edwards would have sued him if he was unsucessful.
Best Edwards leave the theology alone.
Edwards obviously doesn't know a thing about Americans! Americans ignore the plight of the suffering? Fighting a needless war? Gimme a break! Tell that to the Iraqis who used to live everyday in fear for their lives, now able to enjoy freedom. Tell that to the millions of volunteers in this nation and abroad working for the Red Cross, people volunteering in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, church organizations. Americans donate millions, perhaps billions to charity every year. Yes, there are selfish Americans, but America as a whole, is not by any means selfish!
Keep talking John!
Jesus would slap the $h!+ out of Edwards.
Don't know from paddle fish, but check this out in the context of what I said (Damn, he's channelling again):
From the NY Times in 2004 --
"In 1985, a 31-year-old North Carolina lawyer named John Edwards stood before a jury and channeled the words of an unborn baby girl.
Referring to an hour-by-hour record of a fetal heartbeat monitor, Mr. Edwards told the jury: "She said at 3, `I'm fine.' She said at 4, `I'm having a little trouble, but I'm doing O.K.' Five, she said, `I'm having problems.' At 5:30, she said, `I need out.' "
But the obstetrician, he argued in an artful blend of science and passion, failed to heed the call. By waiting 90 more minutes to perform a breech delivery, rather than immediately performing a Caesarean section, Mr. Edwards said, the doctor permanently damaged the girl's brain.
"She speaks to you through me," the lawyer went on in his closing argument. "And I have to tell you right now I didn't plan to talk about this right now I feel her. I feel her presence. She's inside me, and she's talking to you."
So Edwards the girly-man faggot wants to "allow" children to say prayers, silently of course. Well isn't that magnanimous of him. Heads up Breck Girl, you don't get to "allow" people to say prayers. Praying is a protected First Amendment inalienable right given by God. It's not up to you when or how anyone prays.
I don't know if this tops Edwards' pronouncement back in 2004 that Christopher Reeve would have been walking if only democrats had been elected to the White House, but it comes mighty close.
Thank you for pointing that out.
"Biggest damn fool mistake I ever made in my life" --- Dwight Eisenhower, reflecting on his appointment of Earl Warren.
Oh please, this from a man who hired to anti Catholic bigots who blasphemed the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother.
What for the announcement that JE will be selling all he owns to give to the poor.
Jesus would be appalled by someone suing the Red Cross, actually.
If Edwards was alive back then he would probably be figuring out a way to sue Jesus.
