Is this the time for Cheney to resign for health reason so that the successor for 2008 can run as VP?

If nothing else, think about the Senate confirmation hearings? It would be a great chance to show off the new Democratic majority in action!

This puts Pelosi too close to the keys to the castle.

Actually, they can be treated as outpatients just as well with shots twice a day and the warfarin pills....Once the warfarin is effective (generally 5 - 7 days) the shots are stopped. If the clot is in the superficial veins and not the deeper veins they can be treated without blood thinners... so like everything else in medicine...it depends!

Aha! Then Judy Woodruff is full of rat poison, who'd have thunk it...;-)

what if she took a baby aspirin a day--would the clot not have formed?

I had a heart valve replaced in 2000. Been on warfarin ever since. I take an 81 mg. aspirin also.

As I understand it, aspirin and Plavix make platelets slippery, so they don't stick together.

Warfarin interferes with fibrinogen.

On coumadin for 15 years since receiving an artificial heart valve.

I hope he has a speedy recovery. I have peripheral artery disease, and the calves in my legs start hurting when I walk a certain distance. PAD is caused by hardening of the arteries. Not enough blood gets to the lower leg when I walk, so the calves hurt when I walk due to lack of oxygen. When the pain gets to be too much, I stop for 3-5 minutes, then start walking again. My doc said the best thing for the condition is to walk a lot, and once the pain begins, keep walking for as long as possible. That way, newer smaller vessels will grow to take on some of the burden of supplying blood to the extremities. Last Thursday, I managed to walk half a mile without stopping. The worst thing to do if you have PAD is to do a lot of sitting without moving around. It`s a scary condition to have. A couple months ago, my left calf swelled up. My doc had an ultra-sound done on my entire left leg, but could`nt find a clot. It`s back to normal size, now, but it scared the crap out of me.

Prayers for Vice President Cheney. All that round the world diplomacy probably contributed to the blood clot.

This isn't good, knew a fine gentleman (an acquaintance) some years ago who was admitted to the hospital with a blood clot in his leg. He was in the hospital a few days when I stopped by to wish him a quick recovery, it was only a day or two later that he died from the clot which traveled to his heart. I'm sure Cheney's trip last week was a contributing factor.

If Cheney had a DVT then it's a "deep vein."

I'm glad they've come up with new treatments since I had my clot. I felt fine other than my leg being painful, but I was hospitalized and restricted to the bed.

I had Lovenox shots afterward rather than warfarin. I'd take the rat poison over those friggin' shots any day. They were awful!

My brother nearly died from blood clots like this last year (they traveled from his leg to his lungs)

Me too. Only it was only one clot in the lung, and we don't know where it started.

They treat it with rat poison. Coumadin which is warfarin.

Cheney's getting treatment, thank goodness they caught it in time.

My brother had *dozens*. His lungs were completely filled. :*( It's a miracle he survived, but a month in the hospital and lots of heparin and coumadin and prayers later, he's doing fine! It turned out to be something called Factor V Leiden
http://www.fvleiden.org/ or thrombophilia. Our family is the poster child for autoimmune diseases like this!

God Bless Vice-President Cheney. I'm sure he'll be just fine! You can't keep a great man down and I understand he's already back at work.
