Go tell the Spartans, you who read, we took their orders and are dead.
"Living in Sparta must have been sheer misery (rather like North Korea or Stalinist USSR) while living in Athens must have been like a dream in comparison."
Living anywhere at all in the ancient world was a nasty, brutish and short affair.
But if I had to pick where to be living in 400 BC, I think it'd have to be running free with the Chippewa somewhere along Lake Michigan. At least the scenery was beautiful, and the food was plentiful, and at that point there weren't a whole lot of enemies around...no laws to speak of...
"civilization" was a pretty much miserable affair for almost everyone until around 1700.
I've waded through 110 posts before I found somebody who sees this for what it is. I saw the preview... at first it looked cool then it looked... gay. Very gay. I figured it was about the Sacred Band of Thebes, but I guess this was a different bunch of hotpants wearing warriors from Greece.
I don't know if I'd say that.
The women I know think the movie will be a joy to watch. :)
The boys too, apparently. As Mick Jagger once rather famously said, there won't be a dry seat in the house.
Yeah,
not fair though....
Nekkid chicks "It's a guy movie!"
Nekkid guys "It's a (gay) guy movie!"
Leaves us girls with knitting and pot roast I guess.
We women know better. ;)
So is Cool Hand Luke a gay movie? It's got shirtless guys too. Same with Bridge Over the River Kwai.
OK
well, some posters on FR do the same thing, just from a different angle :)
I've never heard of the movie and I really hate anything Hollywood puts out these days, but I may make an exception and see this one. Sounds like it might actually be worth my time.
He is and he is SMOKIN' HOT!!! He's without his shirt most of the movie- and in a really skimpy skirt too!!!
Oh, yesssssssss.
Thanks, Dolly! I can hardly wait! And knowing that German leftists hated it makes it all the sweeter!
"A young white nymphomaniac (Ricci) tries to get "cured" of her problem with the help of an older black blues man (Jackson)."
Which one do you think represents Bush? /sarc
It's based on the battle of Thermopylae pass during the final invasion by the Persians under Xerxes.
300 Spartans (along with many many others) held the Persians at bay at this pass until a local goat herder showed the Persians a way through the mountains via a goat path that allowed them to get in behind them.
Ultimately the Persians lost. Their offensive ops were basically destroyed at a Sea Battle in the straits of Salamis. This by a Greek Force that was vastly outnumbered, and thought to be demoralized and in retreat.
They weren't
However, the Greeks didn't want to fight at Salamis. The Athenian Politician Themisticles used every trick in the book to force first the Persians, and then ultimately the Greeks to fight at Salamis.
Is it about a civilization fighting savages for freedom??
Pray for W and Our Troops
Can anyone tell me what the rating is and why? I want to know if I can take my 13 year old.
