Taiwan President Declares Taiwan Must Seek Independence

Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, in an abrupt move on Sunday, declared that Taiwan must seek independence.

"On the 25th birthday of FAPA (the Formosan Association for Public Affairs), I want to put forward the 'four musts and one no' call. They are: Taiwan must seek independence, must rectify its name, must have a new constitution and must seek development," Chen said at the dinner party marking the 25th anniversary of founding of FAPA, a US- based pro-independence group formed by overseas Taiwanese.

The island of Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa and officially called the Republic of China, was site of the Chinese Nationalist government-in-exile at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

In explaining the "four musts and one no," Chen said that Taiwan's seeking independence owed to the country's being a sovereign state, independent of the People's Republic of China, and that independence was common dream and goal of Taiwan's people.

He said the country should apply for membership of the United Nations under the name "Taiwan," frame a new constitution and develop its economy and democracy in keeping with being an independent nation.

.. Perhaps half the population of Taiwan believes that Taiwan ought to remain part of China, but without formal reunification until such time that the mainland becomes more supportive of political and economic freedom..

And for reasons of their own, the powers in Beijing were willing to put up with the existence of what to them was a 'breakaway province', as long as Taiwan refrained from attempting to formally declare its independance. Beijing figured time was on its side; why fight an expensive war whose outcome could not be guaranteed? Sooner or later, the time would be right for them to reclaim their own with little risk.

That's the significance here; Beijing cannot stand idle when a part of China declares itself free of Beijing control, forever ... what part of mainland China might next declare?

You're quite right about that. Chen is playing a dangerous game of poker, but he doesn't hold the cards he thinks he does.

Due to the unusual circumstances of the ROC/PRC's civil war, the PRC emerged the de facto winner without completely defeating their opponent. The status quo that rose up around it is certainly akward, but a common understanding rose up around it. An odd stability settled on an otherwise intolerable situation, and all sides have allowed it to continue, more or less unchanged, for over half a century. The war ended in a draw, but as a practical, day-to-day matter, it ended.

What this announcement is doing now is basically restarting the civil war. It will shatter what fragile rationale held the peace, and will challenge the leaders in Beijing to do something.

That's the significance here; Beijing cannot stand idle when a part of China declares itself free of Beijing control, forever ... what part of mainland China might next declare?

As a matter of historical note, once a Chinese dynasty fails to put down a rebellion, that dynasty is not long for this Earth. The revolution can come from any number of sectors. Students. Farmers. Ambitions generals. Perhaps the middle class this time? But once the goverment is shown to be weak, it will fail to inspire fear and loyalty among segments of the people that it desperately needs to keep in line.

It's not a part of the mainland Beijing is worried about getting off the reservation. It's what part of society.

That's the problem. He's not playing the hand he was dealt. He is theatrically and obviously pulling an ace out of our hand, and daring both Beijing and Washington to call him on it.

That military ace is a very high card. We never want anyone to use it for their own purpose, but we wanted Taiwan to win anyway, and we sure as hell don't want to risk letting anyone top it. Still, we don't really want to fight China, if we can avoid it. We're tired of fighting as it is, and our fights have been very easy compared to what China can muster.

On the other hand, Beijing doesn't want to challenge this play, but their reputation and livelihood as a serious player is at stake. If they don't do something, even something stupid, then they're done in this line of work. No one will ever take them seriously again. That doesn't leave them a lot of options, though. They may not be as good as us in a fight, but they may not need to be to stand up to us credibly.

Also, there's a lot of folks at the table, and at the bar, who are going to closely watch what happens.

It would make an interesting scene from a movie, that's for sure.

I have begun hearing rumblings from friends on the island that maybe a Chinese invasion wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Yep, never forget the liberal cry of the 50's

"Better Red Than Dead"

The puppet masters forced us to leave Viet Nam pretty horribly.

They are also setting us up to . . . experience . . . our own . . . increase in humility.

Thankfully, There are a lot of Christians here and God is still on their side. Though a lot of them are due for some humility lessons, too. Sigh.

Lets see what the chicoms do.

The Chineese have already said what they will do. They asked a long time ago, is Tiawan really worth San Deigo, LA, and San Francisco?

Who are these "puppet masters" you keep obliquely referring to?

Don't kid yourself. We will do nothing, if China launches a few hundred of their missiles they have facing Taiwan.

Doe no one here remember that Taiwan was originally on the Security Council, that we forced Chiang Kai-shek to except a coalition government that ultimately led to Chiang Kai-shek abandoning mainland China to establish a government in exile?

Do we not remember The Peanut farmer forcing Taiwan to give their seat on the Security Council, to Red China?

Not to mention Harry Truman's invention of the limited war that stopped Douglas MacArthur cold, when we could have taken Mao out for good.

I repeat, we will do nothing, we have engineered the whole thing from the beginning.

Yes and no.

1. I've learned personally to not throw puzzle pieces away no matter how unrelated or unreliable they may seem at the time in one light and one context.

2. It was the fringe off the wall groups who earliest and most accurately predicted what Hitler would do.

3. I don't know what I think of remote viewing. But it is entirely possible that such are tapping into knowledge via

A) demons

and/or

B) ET's

which comes somehow outside of our time/space dimension but is accurate; accurate with falsehoods; false totally about our time/space dimension. The evidence suggests it's a mixture of deception and truth.

But, hey, I'm just offering my perspective. Believe what you wish.

But the hypotheses which take into account and deal well with the widest range of complexity the most accurately stand the best chance of being most useful, fruitful and . . . protective.

Life is complex. All this is very complex. It's going to get worse.

With your screen name, I'd assumed you were well aware of things like

the shadow government . . . globalists determined to set up a tyrannical world government; reduce the world's population to 500,000,000 . . . etc.

They, BTW, are the ones in control of all the exhotic technologies courtesy of our 'visitors.'
