Enter Ann Coulter.
Her "faggot" joke was not just a distraction from all the good that was highlighted and represented at the conference. It was the equivalent of a rhetorical fragging--an intentionally-tossed verbal grenade that exploded in her own fellow ideological soldiers' tent.
There are countless conservatives who bring their children to CPAC. It's a family-friendly event. I brought mine last year and the year before. I met several parents with their kids there this year. We expect CPAC to be a place where conservative role models speak with clarity, passion, and integrity. There are enough spewers of mindless filth, vulgarity, and hatred on TV, at the movies, and in the public schools. We don't expect our children to be exposed to that garbage at the nation's preeminent conservative gathering.
I was in the back of the ballroom and did not see any children in the audience during Coulter's speech. But what if there had been?
Would you want your children hearing the word "faggot" spoken in such a casual and senseless manner? Would you like your first-grader or three-year-old running around the halls of CPAC singing "faggot, faggot, faggot?" Not me. Not anymore than I'd like my toddler singing "gook, gook, gook" or "sambo, sambo, sambo"--favored epithets hurled at conservative minorities by leftist haters groping around in their empty intellectual quivers. There were hundreds of young conservative college students in the ballroom. Would you be proud of your college-age daughter spewing such epithets in her campus debates with leftists?
With a single word, Coulter sullied the hard work of hundreds of CPAC participants and exhibitors and tarred the collective reputation of thousands of CPAC attendees. At a reception for college students held by the Young America's Foundation, I lambasted the substitution of stupid slurs for persuasion-- be it "faggot" from a conservative or "gook" from a liberal--and urged the young people there to conduct themselves at all times with dignity in their ideological battles on and off campus.
I made something else explicitly clear: Not all of us treat the communication of conservative ideals and ideas as 24/7 performance art. You can and should use humor to convey your message. You can enlighten and entertain--without becoming a tired old schtick. You can joke without becoming the joke.

I'm not the one who is uptight - it is people who can't stand a single "bad" word who are uptight.
Ooooooh, Ann drinks! She should be tarred and feathered! Get real.
Dude, are you real? Get off the stuff! Ann has gay friends as do many of us. The "f" word was meant as girly man which is what John Edwards is. And with that hair that doesn't move, what would you call him? I'll bet he uses a blow dryer and gel.
"Hey, gee, Dad, that's swell!"
LOL!!!!! Like a laser, you home in on the very essence of the absurdity that Michelle is proposing.
While a case can surely be made for prolonging the beauty of "childhood innocence" as long as is practicable, most kids today are doubtless a little more calloused, and a little less naive than the estimable Ms. Malkin would like to think, or have us believe.
If you're gonna have kids that are exposed to political thought, current or classical, then by all means, open the floodgates as soon as you think they can start to grasp the import of it all.
Otherwise, what's the point?
CA....
I would like to see a single FReeper tell us why Michelle is wrong. Coulter is a selfish, thoughtless child. She thinks only of herself. She could not give two craps about anyone else who spoke that day.
This doesn't have anything to do with whether one hates Democrats or John Edwards. It has to do with the hard work and preparation of our candidates, of getting the message out to the American people that there are great alternatives to Hillary and Obama and Edwards. People like Duncan Hunter and Mitt Romnney, for example, who most Americans have never heard of. And thanks to this stupid woman, they STILL don't know who they are. "Me, me , me" that is all Ann Coulter is about. And I for one am sick of it.
She isn't even a good speaker. Anyone who has heard her can attest to that: she is great in print and simply dull at the podium. I saw her at one event where Phyllis Schlafly was being honored. Schlafly spoke with strength as well as humor, skewering opponents with class. Then Ann took the stage, with boring sophmoric rants and near profanities. The crowd was left totally flat, with several people saying she insulted Schlafly with her crude and stupid speech. Do you think she cared? She is just useless and should not be invited to CPAC again.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
My own view is that while it's a really bad idea for underage kids such as teenagers to be fooling around with sex before they are mature enough to handle the responsibilities, I've never had a problem with unmarried adults in their 20s having sex.
And no, I don't "get" your point unless you're seriously arguing Ann Coulter remained pure and virginal until she was "over the age of 35" (which means she lost her virginity around 1998 or so). Apparently it's "do as I say, not as I do" for some people.
No, you really don't get my point. I was being sarcastic. I would expect an attractive woman of a certain age to have a love life. Case closed. People have got to learn how to read!
No one could have been more polite and circumspect in his language than Newt Gingrich as Speaker of the House, yet he was villainously defamed and castigated. People who had never seen him or heard him speak were convinced he was the Devil incarnate.
Those who are brainwashed by the incessant drumbeats of the MSM scarcely recognize their information intoxication.
Ann perhaps believes a little cold water is needed to shock them awake. Who knows? Maybe sometimes it works. At least she is speaking her mind, and saying with a voice that gets attention what many of us would like to say if we but had the microphone.
She is certainly not the exemplar to which I wish my daughters would aspire, but if she's going to continue wading into the swamp or the jungle, she's going to need her claws.
Last night Bill Mahr tried to lamely defend his calling for the assassination of the Vice President. Mahr is a disgrace - and yet he is a liberal icon.
