Enter Ann Coulter.
Her "faggot" joke was not just a distraction from all the good that was highlighted and represented at the conference. It was the equivalent of a rhetorical fragging--an intentionally-tossed verbal grenade that exploded in her own fellow ideological soldiers' tent.
There are countless conservatives who bring their children to CPAC. It's a family-friendly event. I brought mine last year and the year before. I met several parents with their kids there this year. We expect CPAC to be a place where conservative role models speak with clarity, passion, and integrity. There are enough spewers of mindless filth, vulgarity, and hatred on TV, at the movies, and in the public schools. We don't expect our children to be exposed to that garbage at the nation's preeminent conservative gathering.
I was in the back of the ballroom and did not see any children in the audience during Coulter's speech. But what if there had been?
Would you want your children hearing the word "faggot" spoken in such a casual and senseless manner? Would you like your first-grader or three-year-old running around the halls of CPAC singing "faggot, faggot, faggot?" Not me. Not anymore than I'd like my toddler singing "gook, gook, gook" or "sambo, sambo, sambo"--favored epithets hurled at conservative minorities by leftist haters groping around in their empty intellectual quivers. There were hundreds of young conservative college students in the ballroom. Would you be proud of your college-age daughter spewing such epithets in her campus debates with leftists?
With a single word, Coulter sullied the hard work of hundreds of CPAC participants and exhibitors and tarred the collective reputation of thousands of CPAC attendees. At a reception for college students held by the Young America's Foundation, I lambasted the substitution of stupid slurs for persuasion-- be it "faggot" from a conservative or "gook" from a liberal--and urged the young people there to conduct themselves at all times with dignity in their ideological battles on and off campus.
I made something else explicitly clear: Not all of us treat the communication of conservative ideals and ideas as 24/7 performance art. You can and should use humor to convey your message. You can enlighten and entertain--without becoming a tired old schtick. You can joke without becoming the joke.

As others have pointed out, we are not talking about anything approaching the equivalent of a racial slur. Race is a characteristic rightly protected by law, public consensus and proper moral sensibility. The practice of sexual perversion is NOT.
Words that properly denigrate those who practice sick and twisted sexual perversion are appropriate, in my view.
That said, such sexually-explicit terms such as "fudge-packer" or "carpet-muncher" would indeed have been inappropriate around children, because they generate an image that is itself offensive because it is an image of the offensive sexual conduct of the perverts.
But "faggot" is neutral, and there is nothing about the practice of sexual perversion that deserves the kinds of protections properly reserved for characteristics such as race or nationality.
There you go!!
Edwards is a trial lawyer he has lied and whored himself for the money to pay for that house he killed a whole forest to build.
Why not go all the way with this video???
rom: I agree completely... I have only looked at a few Freeper replies (prior to yours) but it disappointments me (doesn't really surprise me, I guess) that more Freepers don't agree that Ann's over-the-top stupidity does herself and our cause a disservice. JMHO.
I am asking about you. What is your relationship with Michele Malkin?
Malkin, Fox News contributor ping request
There is plenty of trash on Madison Avenue. In fact, New York city can't find places to put it anymore... there was trash speaking there that night, but it wasn't Miss Coulter...
"What if"? Oh, b-rother. I can't believe Malkin resorted to such a lame rhetorical device.
You are repeating a MainStream exaggeration. Ann was referring specifically to the select group of five women called "the Jersey Girls." She correctly identified them as publicity hounds and activists in the style of Cindy Sheehan.
The thing I get a kick out of is that the left always quote Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin etc. whenever they want to blast conservatives. The right on the other hand, quote Clintoon, Skerry, the Beast, orca etc. Last I checked, Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin etc. don't hold public office.
Your not worth the time. You'll just keep posting your stupidity slammin' sammy boy.
Whoa! That's some deep....stuff. So what do you do? Tap your children on the shoulder as you're walking down the street and say, 'Hey, that guy over there is offending my sensibilities....call him a name for me, will ya"?
Sometimes I just can't believe what I read on here.
"Funny but the conservatives who praise Malkin for slamming the left for cheap tactics are so very quick to turn on her for calling out the high priestess of biatch, Anorexic Coulter."
I don't know that this is true at all. Could you show who has done that? I happen to like Ann and Michelle, but I think Michelle's grasping so she'll get invited back to the right cocktail parties. Ann didn't say anything most conservatives haven't said...what she proved is how many 'conservatives' think homosexuality deserves respect, because around here, look how many think it's offensive to label it in an appropriately derisive manner? If Ann had called Mark Foley a jailbait stalker, people wouldn't even blink on the left or right, but intimating that a leftist is a queer--using a word homos freely use themselves--is labeled heresy?
This place is, sadly, far more inhabited by the PC crowd than I thought. Too bad she didn't say niggardly or macaca so y'all can call her racist, too, and make yourselves feel like you fit in the left's 'approved conservatives' box.
Coulter has skewered you both on the pikes of your own hypocrisy.
This is Malkin's way of hopping on to the Coulter story coattails.
That's another point. It was not just dropping a dirty word out of the blue.
When she said "I was going to have a few comments on the other presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word "faggot" so I'm kind of at an impass, I can't really talk about Edwards . . ." she was referencing this bit of contemporary pop culture news: Isaiah Washington Goes To Big Gay Rehab
That is the way I see it also. I like the idea of Edwards getting money that could otherwise go to a serious candidate later.
All this guilt over the possibility of what this would have done to "little ears" and such...maybe Michelle should become the housewife and mother she knows she should be. Hehe.
